Saranac boys win league title

The Saranac boys' cross country team wins twice to become CVAC champs

PLATTSBURGH — Seton Catholic had the better race, but with two wins on Tuesday the Saranac boys' cross country team became the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference team champion.

The Knights swept the field in the four-team meet, defeating the Chiefs — only Saranac's second loss of 2011 — along with AuSable Valley and Ticonderoga.

Saranac (15-2) earned wins over AuSable Valley and Ticonderoga.

The Seton Catholic girls' team (16-1) also had a strong day with three victories.

With Peru (16-1) winning twice also, and the two teams tied in head-to-head competition this year, the league champion will be determined in a run-off in the CVAC meet this Saturday.

Mitchell Ryan and Barrett Waling finished 1-2 for Seton Catholic in the boys' race, with Ryan crossing the finish line in 16:51 and Waling 11 seconds later.

Josh Wade took third to lead the Chiefs, who had seven runners in the top 15. The next finisher for Saranac was Zach LePage in seventh.

Tyler Belden took fourth to lead the Sentinels (9-9).

Margaret Champagne added another first-place finish for Seton in the girls' race, clocking in at 19:40, more than a minute ahead of the rest of the field.

Teammate Phoebe Christopher took second. The Knights had all five of their runners finish in the top eight.

Saranac's Tracy Rush and Lexi Blockson took third and fourth, respectively, as the Chiefs (14-4) earned wins over Ticonderoga and AuSable Valley (0-16).

Hannah Herbet's 14th-place finish paced the Sentinels (0-13).
