PLATTSBURGH — Last year in the NYSPHSAA Class D girls' soccer regional final, Chazy was put to the test by Chateaugay before winning, 2-1.
Saturday's rematch was the same type of game as the defending state champion Eagles defeated the Bulldogs by a 2-1 score at Plattsburgh High School to advance to this coming weekend's Final Four.
The Eagles will play Section III's Remsen in the Final Four semifinals at 11 a.m. at Cortland High School. Chazy and Remsen are currently tied at the top of the state rankings among Class D schools.
Freshman Rachel Pombrio scored the game-winning goal midway through the second half as the Section VII champions (19-1) moved one step closer to defending their state championship.
"They (Chateaugay) were aggressive and concentrated on defending," Chazy coach Karin Sherman-Trombley said. "But, we were able to come out of it with a win and we're going on."
The Eagles, who showed they can win the close games after breezing through the Section VII Tournament, held a 1-0 lead at the half.
But, with 20:37 gone in the second half, the Section X champions (16-3-1) were awarded a free kick from 20 yards out. Kelley Favaro sent a lofting shot from an angle into the far corner of the net to pull the Bulldogs even.
"Against a team as good as Chazy, it's tough to score," Chateaugay coach Steve Lang said. "They defend very well."
The tie, however, didn't last long.
Less than a minute later, at 21:28, Christina Emery sent a pass into the middle where Pombrio knocked the ball down and slipped it past Chateaugay netminder Makayla Fleury, who came out on the play.
"When they scored, it could have put a damper on things," Sherman-Trombley said. "But, we came back hard to regain the lead. That's something we've been working on when the opponent scores.
"Pombrio came off the bench and did a great job for us with a goal and assist. That's what we're looking for from her."
The Eagles opened the scoring late in the first half at the 34:27 mark. Pombrio crossed the ball in front where a Bulldog defender headed it. Unfortunately for Chateaugay, the ball deflected behind her where Caitlyn LaPier was there to head it into the net.
"Chateaugay did a good job taking us out of our game," Sherman-Trombley said. "They're well coached and stayed on top of everything.
"They played smart."
Katharine Tooke made four saves in the Chazy nets and Fleury stopped six shots for Chateaugay, which is young with only two seniors on a 20-player roster.
"The girls gave it their best," Lang said. "That's the second year in a row where we've lost to them, 2-1. But, we're going to keep trying.
"We had some chances, but Chazy scored two good goals. Our girls gave it everything they had and there was sweat on their foreheads.
"Good luck to Chazy at the Final Four."
