PLATTSBURGH — The Chazy boys' soccer team is getting stingy in its bid for another state championship.
The Section VII champion Eagles recorded their fourth-consecutive shutout in post-season play Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Section X winner Parishville-Hopkinton in the NYSPHSAA Class D regional finals at Plattsburgh High School.
Brandon Laurin and Josh Barriere tallied second-half goals as Chazy recorded its 17th shutout of the season in 20 games.
"I'm very pleased with the team," Chazy coach Rob McAuliffe said. "The players came into the game today with a very good mindset.
"I knew this was going to be a good test for us and I'm proud of the guys for the way they played."
The defending state champion Eagles (17-3) move on to the Final Four this coming weekend and will play Section V's Alfred-Almond at 1:30 p.m. at Middletown High School in the semifinals. Alfred-Almond advanced with a 2-0 victory over Section VI's North Collins.
The other Final Four semifinal will have Section III's Hamilton taking on Section II's Fort Ann at 4 p.m.
The Eagles were unable to break through against the Panthers (14-3-3) in the first half, despite holding a decisive edge in territorial play.
McAuliffe, however, wasn't worried.
"Parishville-Hopkinton is well coached and they defend very well," he said. "But, we have a lot of players who have been in big games.
"I felt that if we scored the first goal, it would open it up and we would get more chances."
The first goal came with just 3:57 gone in the second half. Laurin scored on a header in traffic off a long throw-in by Nathan Reynolds.
It stayed that way until the 20:32 mark.
Nelson Pelton made a run down the left side, attacked the end line and sent in a low shot that Panthers' goaltender Parker Meashaw made the save on. But, Josh Barriere was there to put the rebound into the net.
"It was a great goal," McAuliffe said. "It came off a nice individual effort by Pelton. Barriere, who is a freshman, then finished it. He has played well for us this year."
The Panthers were unable to get much of anything going offensively against the Eagles as Austin Santor was called upon to make just two saves in net for Chazy.
"Once we got the second goal, I felt good because of the way we have been defending," McAuliffe said. "The guys know what they have to do."
Meashaw finished with seven saves for the Panthers, who dropped a 2-0 decision to Chazy in last year's regional finals.
Prior to Saturday, the Eagles had recorded shutout wins over Westport, Elizabethtown-Lewis and Willsboro in the Section VII Tournament. Chazy has allowed goals in just three of its 20 games thus far on the season.
