Sentinels seek improvement vs. Flyers

PLATTSBURGH — Following the excitement last Wednesday, the Ticonderoga girls' softball team is hoping to make things easier on itself today.

The Sentinels will play Section X champion Norwood-Norfolk at 3:15 p.m. at Plattsburgh State in the opening round of the NYSPHSAA Class C Tournament.

The Sentinels weren't on their game in their Section VII championship contest against Lake Placid.

But Ticonderoga was able to overcome its mistakes when Taylor Ward's dramatic seventh-inning grand slam, with nobody out, rallied the Sentinels to a 6-5 victory over the Blue Bombers and the championship.

"We're still in shock," Ticonderoga co-coach Shannon Huntington said. "We were fortunate to win, but hopefully we're back on track.

"The girls certainly know they can do better. Maybe it was a case of some of the girls playing too hard. We did, however, make a lot of mistakes."

Andrea Rich leads the team with a .446 batting average with five doubles and three home runs. Katie Palandrani is not far behind at .444.

Megan Campney and Jessica Blodgett each have 14 RBI and are both batting above .400. Calsie Granger leads the team with 17 RBI.

Jordan McKee is the team's leader in wins with a 7-2 record.

Second-seeded Norwood-Norfolk (10-8), meanwhile, held off fourth-seeded Madrid-Waddington, 6-5, to capture the Section X crown.

Winning pitcher Paige Harvey, who changed her speeds well in the game, struck out the game's final batter with the tying run on first.

Jessica Harvey went 3-for-3 as the Flyers finished with 12 hits in all.

It was the first sectional championship for Norwood-Norfolk coach Becky Byrns.

"Norwood-Norfolk bunts a lot and has some very fast players," Huntington said.

"Their pitcher doesn't throw hard and we worked in practice on slowing our bats down some. We need to time their pitching and I believe was can get some hard hits."

It's been a bit of a rebuilding season for the Sentinels, who have a 13-4 overall record.

"We have basically a new team with only two starters returning from last year," Huntington said. "After winning the sectionals, everything is gravy now.

"But the girls are anxious to show what they can really do."

If the Sentinels win today, they will play Section II winner Greenwich at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Queensbury at the Adirondack Sports Center, with a berth in the Final Four on the line.

"We played against several of their players during the summer league," Huntington said.

"If we beat Norwood-Norfolk, it's good to have a day between games so we can practice on facing a faster pitcher."
