Defensive Peru squares off with Canton ace

Peru coach Jason Brown coached the JV team for four years before taking over varsity from Larry Ewald this season.

Brown helped guide many of the players he helped groom to the Indians' second straight Section VII Class B softball title.

Now he will lead them into the NYSPHSAA tournament at 1 p.m. today when Peru plays Section X's Canton at Plattsburgh State's Cardinal Park.

"It's great to see them winning and just staying with the program and making the program better," Brown said.

The Indians (15-3) captured the Section VII Class B championship with a 1-0 victory against Plattsburgh High Thursday.

Earlier in May, the Hornets defeated the Indians, 11-0. It was the first loss for Peru but provided a reality check.

The Indians lost just two games after that loss, and those were 2-0 and 1-0 decisions.

"They finally all came together as a team and played up to their potential," Brown said. "If we play up to our potential there's no team we can't run with and beat."

Dani Dayton, who pitched Peru to victory against the Hornets, will start against the Golden Bears.

Dayton, a junior, has a 1.95 ERA and 63 strikeouts against 19 walks.

Taylor Rock leads the team with 29 hits and a .426 batting average. She also has a team-leading 18 RBI and four triples.

Brianna Padron is batting .364 with six doubles, 18 RBI and has 16 stolen bases.

The Indians fell to Section II powerhouse Mechanicville last season.

Peru is going up against a formidable opponent in Canton senior ace Kacie Wentworth, who will pitch for Division I Sacred Heart next year.

Wentworth has thrown more than 127 innings this season for the Golden Bears, recording an 0.82 ERA with 210 strikeouts against 18 walks.

Wentworth, who has won four straight Section X Class B championships, is coming off a no-hitter against Ogdensburg in the sectional finals. Wentworth tossed 12 strikouts in the Golden Bears' 7-0 victory over OFA.

"We know that she throws hard, and she changes speed very well," Brown said. "We've done a few things in practice to simulate the speed and change of speeds.

"Hopefully it works out for us."
