PLATTSBURGH — Kyle Bisonette is quickly earning a reputation as a big-game pitcher.
And he's just a sophomore in his first varsity season.
Bisonette pitched a complete-game two-hitter to lead Chazy past Westport/Keene, 5-1, for the Eagles' first-ever Section VII Class D baseball title Thursday at Chip Cummings Field.
"I'm elated," Chazy coach Brian Norcross said. "I'm very proud for the 13 kids on the team. It's something special to be the first group of boys to win a sectional title in baseball. I'm very happy for the kids."
The Eagles (12-1) get a first-round bye in the NYSPHSAA tournament and will play Tuesday against the winner of a first-round game between Section X and Section II representatives.
Bisonette earned his second victory of the Section VII tournament. He had a complete-game win against Wells in the quarterfinal round.
Bisonette worked in and out of trouble early despite holding the Beagles hitless through four innings.
He struck out eight, including a called third strike against 2010 Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference Div. II MVP Kevin Russell to end the game. He walked four and hit one batter.
"I just came out and threw my hardest," Bisonette said. "I knew I had to work ahead of the batters and just stay positive no matter what happened."
Westport/Keene's lone run came on a balk with runners on second and third in the fourth inning.
Chazy defeated Westport/Keene (8-3) for the third time this season. The Beagles have reached and lost in the title game twice since the schools merged the baseball program two seasons ago.
"That's a good baseball team over there," Westport/Keene co-coach Don Markwica said. "They are sound fundamentally and they're well-coached. If you make a mistake, you're going to pay."
"We found that out twice this year and again in this game."
Kaleb Snide and Nathan Reynolds hit RBI doubles for Chazy, which totaled just four hits and no player had more than one.
The aggressive Eagles stole seven bases, three by Ricky Osier, who scored twice and also added a walk.
Osier reached in the first inning on a fielder's choice and scored when Snide dropped a double right next to the chalk down the right-field line. Snide made it 2-0, scoring from second on an error.
Chazy manufactured a run in the second when Kyle McCarthy reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Austin Santor.
McCarthy scored when Reynolds doubled down the right-field line.
The Eagles walked twice to open third, setting up an RBI single from John Tregan and another run via error to make it 5-0.
The Beagles used an error and a hit batter to put two on in the fourth. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and Bisonette was called for a balk, plating Westport/Keene's first and only run.
Snide, Chazy's shortstop, ended the inning with a nice play up the middle.
James Bell pitched well in relief of Sam Earl, who took the loss. Bell struck out six, walked three and allowed just one hit.
Westport/Keene got its first hit when Dave Quaglietta lined a pitch off Bisonette's glove in the fourth inning, but Bisonette followed that by inducing two ground outs.
"I was going to let them hit the ball and let my team play defense," Bisonette said.
