The Chazy boys' baseball team provides the final shot for a local team to win a NYSPHSAA game.
Extra pressure?
"Nah, not really," Chazy coach Brian Norcross said with a laugh.
The Eagles, coming off their first Section VII Class D title, will play Section II's Loudonville Christian in the regional finals at 4 p.m. today at the Morse Athletic Complex in Queensbury.
With little time to prepare for an opponent — Norcross was still waiting for the winner between Loudonville Christian and Lisbon when answering questions — the Chazy team is just focused on playing well today.
"We're happy to have achieved our goal to have won a Division I title and a sectional title, and we'll take our chances and hopefully play a solid game and go from there," Norcross said.
Behind a complete-game effort from No. 2 pitcher Kyle Bisonette, the top-seeded Eagles edged Westport/Keene, 5-1, at Chip Cummings Field for the Class D crown.
The Section VII representative had a bye in the regional semifinals, so the Eagles had to wait a day.
Chazy (12-1) is riding a 10-game winning streak after suffering its lone loss of the season.
"Defensively we've been very solid all year," Norcross said. "We've only given up more than four runs once this year in a game, so defensively we've been pretty good all year.
"We've had timely hitting and our pitching has been solid."
Staff ace and senior Ricky Osier will take the mound for the Eagles. Osier has not pitched since getting the win over Crown Point in the Class D semifinals on May 31.
"He's well-rested and excited to throw," Norcross said.
Bisonette and Nathan Reynolds are available to pitch as well.
Norcross said as the season went on his seniors — Osier, Kaleb Snide, John Tregan and Andrew Duprey — have stepped up to lead the team.
He cited the semifinal win as an example. Osier went the distance on the mound and Tregan and Snide combined for seven hits and 10 RBI.
"The upperclassmen have come through with great leadership and everything has come on board," Norcross said. "It's been a really fun year."
Along with representing Section VII, Norcross said getting recognition for the Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference would also be nice.
"Of course I would love to rep our league because I think the MVAC does have good baseball teams," he said.
Loudonville Christian (17-2) defeated Section X's Lisbon, 10-6, on Monday in regional semifinal action.
The Central Hudson Valley League champions defeated Germantown, 13-3, to win the Section II Class D title and first boys' sectional title in any sport for the school.
