The Ticonderoga Sentinels proved in the sectional final that they can keep their composure, and coach Dan Dorsett thinks that will give them some confidence in regional play.
Ticonderoga (10-4) meets Fort Plain today in the NYSPHSAA Class C baseball regional semifinals in Albany. The winner plays Norwood-Norfolk in a regional final.
The Sentinels gave up five runs to Northern Adirondack in the second inning of the Section VII championship game, but they came back to win 11-5.
"It definitely helps because now ... we've got nothing to lose," Dorsett said. "Now we can play relaxed and hopefully get off to a little better start — don't have the big inning. And we'll see what happens."
Ticonderoga claimed its seventh straight title last Tuesday. Dan Morrison led the way with four hits in that game, and Nate Lenhart and Tyler Tucker each had two. Pitcher Tanner Purkey fought back from a difficult second inning to earn the win.
Fort Plain (20-3) won four games in the Section II playoffs, including a 5-1 victory over Cambridge in the Class C-CC game. The Hilltoppers outscored their opponents 42-4. They have captured five of the last six Class C crowns.
The Toppers have won their last seven games, and their only regular-season defeats were May 18 doubleheader losses to Class B's Saratoga Catholic and an opening-day setback against Schoharie.
The roster features multi-talented senior Jabin Weaver, who's 9-1 on the pitching mound with a 1.65 ERA. He also leads Fort Plain with a .521 batting average and 31 RBI.
Brent Baker is another big hitter, with a team-best 43 hits, 28 RBI and a .500 average.
Fort Plain has averaged just under 11 runs per game.
The Sentinels and Toppers have met in the playoffs before. Fort Plain won regional-final matchups in 2007 and 2008.
Ticonderoga also fell in the regional finals the last two years — to Greenwich in 2010 and Maple Hill in 2009.
