PLATTSBURGH — Beekmantown kept the puck in its offensive end most of the first period, and Alexandria Bay goaltender Kayla Rios kept the Eagles off the scoreboard.
But the Eagles felt they were bound to break through eventually.
"It gets a little frustrating, but we knew if we just kept chugging along. I mean, she's obviously a very talented goalie," Beekmantown forward Sara LoTemplio said. "If we kept it up, we thought we'd probably score."
It didn't take them long in the second period.
LoTemplio notched two quick ones in a three-goal period and Beekmantown went on to defeat Alexandria Bay, 4-0, in an Upstate Girls' Hockey League semifinal Friday at Stafford Ice Arena.
The Eagles (19-0-2) will play Potsdam in the championship game this morning. Beekmantown will make its third appearance in the final and is seeking its first title.
The Eagles outshot the Purple Ghosts, 14-4 in the first period, and Rios made a number of good saves, including one on a Beekmantown 2-on-1.
"We were telling our girls to go to the net (in the second period) because she was very good on direct shots. So rebounds were a must," Beekmantown coach Ray Guay said. "When Sara got those first two goals, that kind of opened things up."
With a player from each team in the penalty box, Jess Huber took a shot and the rebound sat in the crease right in front of LoTemplio, who slammed it in the right side at 1:48. She made it 2-0 with a rebound goal from the left side less than three minutes later.
Late in the period, Huber skated in from the right side of the net and slipped the puck inside the right post.
The line of LoTemplio, Huber and Lauren O'Connor totaled seven points.
"I think our team kind of has this chemistry. Our line did really well (Friday), and every night a different line will step it up," LoTemplio said. "I think we just found the back of the net (Friday). We've been playing together for a while; we've been working really hard together. So I think that might have helped."
Alexis Guay redirected a pass on the rush for a 4-0 lead in the final minute of the game.
Beekmantown's Christina Emery earned the shutout with 12 saves. Rios totaled 36 stops for Alexandria Bay (10-10-2).
Potsdam's Ally Miller scored all of her team's goals in its 5-1 win over Ithaca in the second game of the night. Jenny Tardelli made seven saves.
Beekmantown, which made the final four for the fourth consecutive year, fell in the championship game in 2009 and 2011.
"We are really motivated," LoTemplio said. "We've been pumping each other up all week. We've been here three times before with this team, so we really want it. Really badly."
