LYON MOUNTAIN — The Lyon Mountain Miners tasted defeat for the first time this season — and then the second time — on Saturday.
The Plattsburgh Cardinals recorded a 20-7 and 5-4 sweep in Champlain Valley Baseball League action at the Big Ball Diamond.
The outcome left the Miners (12-2) one game ahead of the Cardinals (11-3) at the top of the CVBL standings.
In Game 1, the Cardinals held a 10-7 lead before blowing it open in the final two innings.
Craig Bujold and Casey Buck led the Cardinals with three hits each, with Buck driving in three runs.
Adam Porter, Steve Burris, Alex LaFountain and David Latulipe all added two hits apiece, with Porter getting a home run and four RBI and LaFountain three RBI. Nate Durkee homered and Tory Bouyea doubled, while Gary Duquette was the winning pitcher in relief.
David Waldron paced the Miners with a single, double and triple, while Nick Chase added a single and triple, Kris Chase two hits and Jamie Juntunen a double.
Game 2 was a lot more competitive as the Cardinals prevailed in eight innings.
The Miners took a 2-1 lead into the top of the seventh inning when Bujold hit a sacrifice fly to force extra innings. The Cardinals then scored three times in the eighth, with Bouyea and Burris getting RBI singles.
Tommy Kowalowski's two-out, two-run single pulled the Miners to within one in the bottom of the eighth.
Burris struck out nine, walked two and allowed six hits in going the distance for the win.
Burris accounted for two of the Cardinals' five hits in the contest.
Nick Chase and Tommy Kowalowski led the Miners with two hits each, with Chase getting a double.

SARANAC — Donny Coolidge rapped a home run, triple and three RBI in Game 1 and added a double, single and three RBI in Game 2 as the Airborne Speedway Padres (4-10) completed a sweep of the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx (6-8).
Jordan Keysor struck out 13 and walked six in going six innings for the win in the opener.
Matt Seymour, meanwhile, fanned one and did not walk anyone in pitching six innings for the win in the nightcap.
In Game 1, Eric Bell added a home run, single and two RBI for the Padres, while Mark Eggleston chipped in with a double and single.
D.J. Barber led the Timberjaxx with two hits and a RBI. Justin Mahan doubled in two runs in the first inning and Jimmy Knight singled in another.
In Game 2, Shane Perrotte rapped out two hits for the Padres and Jeff Norton doubled. Matt Rivers reached base six of seven times on the day and scored four runs.
Aaron Goldfarb paced the Timberjaxx with a single, double and RBI, while David Shutts added a RBI double.

The third CVBL doubleheader of the weekend will be played in Saranac today when the Meron's Expos host the Fourth Ward A's at noon.
Next Sunday will be a schedule of make-up games with the Miners hosting the Expos in Lyon Mountain, the Cardinals at the Timberjaxx at South Acres Field, and the A's entertaining the Padres at Lefty Wilson Field.
