Alpine skiing

SARANAC LAKE — Sean Madden, of Saranac Lake, completed the alpine skiing sweep Friday in winning the boy's slalom at Mount Pisgah.

Just 24 hours earlier, Madden took ESWG gold in the giant slalom at Whiteface Mountain. The high school sophomore turned his familiarity with the changing Mount Pisgah terrain into a victory. He later credited the Mount Pisgah staff and his coaches at the New York Ski Educational Foundation for his success at these Games.

Madden opened with a run of 34.40 seconds to take the lead.

His second run time of 34.60 was the heat's second fastest, giving him a two-run aggregate time of one, minute, 09.00 seconds. It was good enough for a 0.36 of a second victory over Nico Petrocci, of Skaneateles.

Cross country skiing

LAKE PLACID — Local cross country skiers dominated the two kilometer scholastic freestyle event Friday.

The Nordic events are taking place on predominantly man-made snow at the Olympic Ski Jumping Complex, just outside Lake Placid.

Although 10 miles of recreational skiing is available to the public at the 1980 Olympic trail network on Mount Van Hoevenberg, the competitions were moved from that venue due to insufficient snow depth for racing.

The boy's J1 classification saw Will Feiroh, of Paul Smiths, cover the course — excellent for spectator viewing - that meandered around the ski jump stadium, behind the freestyle skiing complex and alongside the main parking lot.

Feiroh clocked a time of five minutes, 31 seconds to capture the gold medal. Wilton's Alex Howk was second in 6:16.

Royal McDonnell, also of Paul Smiths, took gold in the J3 boy's event in 5:28. Bryce Hartman, of Saranac Lake, skied to a silver medal in 6:27. The bronze medal was shared in a photo finish by Ethan Wood, of Ray Brook, and Henry McGrew, of Lake Placid, with identical times of 6:28.

Tupper Lake's Gretchen O'Leary was the J1 girl's champion in 6:07.

Steve Vargo, of Lake Placid, led the field in the open men's two kilometer freestyle race, taking gold in the M3 class in 4:58. Second place went to Eric Seyse, of Scotia, in 5:13. The bronze medalist was Alex Goff, also of Lake Placid, in 5:21.

The open female division for seniors, also at a distance of two kilometers, was dominated by Abbey Alexiades, of Etna, in 6:32.

Janet Findlay, of Lake Placid, was the silver medalist in 6:56, and Ann E. Jardin, of Mexico, N.Y., was the bronze medal winner in 7:31.

Adirondack kept pace with Western New York, also 4-0, as the teams head to the medal round.

In brilliant sunshine, Daniels, of Loudon, N.H., flew 50 and 50.5 meters off the 48 meter hill en route to his J2 victory. They were the two best flights of the day.

The winner had 238.9 total points for distance and style. Miles Lussi, of Lake Placid, sailed to a silver medal with a pair of 48.5 meter attempts for 229.7 points.

The bronze medal went to Matt Doyle, of Salisbury, Conn., who matched Lussi's jump distances, but totaled 223.7 points.

Daniels' jumping, combined with his five kilometer skiing, enabled him to win a second gold medal in the Nordic combined at the Olympic Jumping Complex outside Lake Placid.

The J3 competition on the 48 meter hill saw Schulz, of Lake Placid, take his first gold medal. Landon Liverari, also of Lake Placid, was a close second and collected the silver, with A.J. King, of Salisbury, Conn., picking up the bronze medal.

Schulz won his gold medal in Nordic combined jumping from the smaller 18 meter hill, together with a three kilometer cross country ski race. Trent White was second and Brian Byrne finished third. White and Byrne are also from Lake Placid.
