Olympian Kelly captures speed skating gold

LAKE PLACID — After a 25-year hiatus, long track speed skating returned to the Empire State Winter Games Friday at the same venue where Eric Heiden won an unprecedented five Olympic gold medals in 1980.

To keep the Olympic theme consistent, 1992 and 1994 Olympian Patrick Kelly of Lake Placid captured the gold medal in the 500-meter open division. In addition, five skaters each from Syracuse and Saratoga left the 400-meter Olympic Oval with medals.

On a snowy evening in Lake Placid, a Pittsfield, Mass. skater, John Murphy, collected the silver and Robert Sanson, of Saratoga, was the bronze medalist.

The open women's division saw Emily Elbers of Syracuse battle to the gold medal. Buffalo's Julie Gehring was the silver medalist, and Carol Moore, of Queens claimed a bronze.

In pre-scholastic girls' competition, Greta Stahl of Saratoga outraced the field to a gold medal. Sydney Terpening of Syracuse took the silver, with Saratoga's Molly Dexter getting bronze.

The pre-scholastic boys' competition saw a pair of Saratoga athletes take gold and silver, with Albert Zhong and Spencer Ripchik placing 1-2. The bronze went to Ivan Yumagulov of Syracuse.

Lake Placid's Esther Munoz used familiar training ground to score a gold medal among scholastic women. Jen Lopez of Syracuse collected the silver, and Hannah Conway of Green Mountain, Vt. took the bronze.

Among scholastic men, it was James Loft (Albany) skating off with the gold medal. Adam Horeth (Rochester) got the silver, with Alex Zamojski winding up with a bronze.

Women's hockey

LAKE PLACID — The Adirondack region women's hockey team won its second game in as many starts Friday, trouncing New York City, 9-0, in a preliminaryround game.

Christin Powers of Canton led the Adirondack attack with a hat trick, while Christie Sharlow of Potsdam and Monique Rafferty of Saratoga Springs each added a pair of goals.

Saranac Lake native and 2002 Olympic silver medalist Andrea Kilbourne-Hill and Lake Placid's Stephanie Holmes contributed three assists a piece.

Leading just 1-0 after one period, Adirondack exploded for six goals in a span of 7:11 in the middle frame.

The victory enabled Adirondack to stay even with Western New York, which is also 2-0.

Goaltender Amanda Durrer got the shutout. New York City's record slipped to 1-1.

Kylie Mazzetta and Katie Stack each contributed a goal and an assist to lead Western New York to a 3-2 victory over Central.

Central's Lauren Dahm made 43 saves, and Western's netminder, Alex Talbott, only needed to stop seven shots.

Marissa Dombovy-Johnson tallied the winning goal with just 3:24 remaining in the game.

Alexis Moed scored a pair of goals to lead New York City to a 3-1 victory against Hudson Valley in both teams' first game Friday.

Jennifer Abramo scored Hudson Valley's goal near the end of the first period. New York City's Kathryn Kroleski broke a 1-1 tie as the second stanza concluded.

Hudson Valley's Sophia Kokkonis stopped 42 shots in a losing cause.

Slalom

SARANAC LAKE — Alexis Kane of North Syracuse skied the two best times of the day to win the girls' slalom at Mt. Pisgah.

Her first run time of 39.59 seconds was followed by 40.24 seconds for a total time of one minute 19.83 seconds. She defeated Alex Miller of Barneveld by just over a second.

Mckenzie Liddle of Old Forge clocked 1:21.86 to take bronze.

Kane defeated a field of 36 skiers on the rolling course just outside of Saranac Lake. This is the first time Mt. Pisgah has held an Empire State Winter Games alpine event.

The boy's results were not available at press time.
