Miners squeak out sweep

LYON MOUNTAIN — The Lyon Mountain Miners are making a habit of pulling out improbable wins in the first game of doubleheaders.

The Miners, who improved their unbeaten record to 8-0, rallied for a 3-2 win over the Fourth Ward A's in the opener Sunday and then completed their Champlain Valley Baseball League sweep with a 9-6 victory in Game 2.

In Game 1, the Miners tied the game, at 2-all, on David Waldron's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the seventh, Reilly Lawless doubled with one out, took third on an infield grounder and scored the game-winning run on an infield error.

Waldron struck out six in going the distance for the pitching win and helped his cause at the plate with a home run in the first and his RBI hit in the sixth.

Gus Terry was the tough-luck losing pitcher as he went the route while allowing just four hits.

Nick Desroches led the A's (2-6) with three hits, while Michael Howard added two hits and a RBI. Terry chipped in with a double.

In Game 2, the Miners broke a 6-all tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Kyle Kowalowski rapped two hits, including a home run and four runs scored. Lawless contributed two triples, while Jamie Juntunen added a double and single. Justin Besaw was the winning pitcher in relief.

Jake Tolosky paced the A's with three hits. Terry, Howard and Brandon Hatch all added two hits each, with Terry getting a double and Howard two RBI.

PLATTSBURGH — Justin Mahan hit a grand slam in both games and the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx (3-5) scored seven runs in the seventh inning of both games on the way to a sweep of the Meron's Expos (4-4).

In Game 1, Mahan, Jim Knight and David Shutts led the way with two hits each, with Mahan getting his grand slam and Knight a double and three RBI. The Tiimberjaxx erased a 6-2 deficit with six runs in the third.

Mark Rexford and Tyler Mesec led the Expos with two hits each, with Rexford getting a RBI double. Kris Cauchon chipped in with a two-run double.

In Game 2, the Expos held a 5-0 lead before the Timberjaxx got six runs in the fourth to take the lead for good.

D.J. Barber, Knight and Josh Chapman rapped out three hits each for the Fourth Ward, while Richard Chase added two hits and Mahan his second grand slam of the day.

Cauchon, Cliff Conners, Pat Shaughnessy and Andy Gooch paced Meron's with two hits each, with Gooch getting a double and three-run homer, Shaughnessy a two-run homer and Conners a double.

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh Cardinals (7-1) rallied with eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the first game and then held on in the second to compete their sweep of the Airborne Speedway Padres (0-8).

In Game 1, the Padres held a 6-1 lead when the Cardinals broke loose in the sixth, with Adam Porter and David Latulipe getting two-run singles in the inning.

The Padres had the tying run at the plate in the seventh, but couldn't pull any closer.

Tom Neale led Plattsburgh with two hits, including a double.

Mark Eggleston drove in four of the Padres' runs with a two-run single and two-run homer. He and Frank Brogna hit back-to-back homers in the fifth.

In Game 2, Steve Burris struck out eight in going the distance for the pitching win.

The Cardinals held a 5-0 lead before the Padres scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Tory Bouyea rapped a double and single for the Cardinals and Tom Neale hit a two-run homer in a three-run third.

Shane Perrotte led Airborne Speedway, which has lost four of its games by one run this season, with a single and double, while Matt Rivers doubled.
