Cards sweep, throw no-hitter in CVBL action

PLATTSBURGH — Alex LaFountain and Gary Duquette combined on a no-hitter in the second game Sunday and the Fourth Ward Cardinals went on to record an 8-3 and 7-0 doubleheader sweep of the Lyon Mountain Miners in Champlain Valley Baseball League play at Lefty Wilson Field.

LaFountain struck out two and walked three in going the first five innings for the win and Duquette fanned two and did not walk anyone in getting the save.

Tory Bouyea went 2-for-2, including a double and two RBI, for the Cardinals (5-3). Bouyea also made the defensive play of the game when a ball was hit off LaFountain’s glove and Bouyea came in to bare hand it and get the out on a bang-bang play at first base.

Will Flynn and Joe Tolosky added two hits each for the Fourth Ward, while Steve Burris drove in two runs.

Chris VanHouten took the pitching loss.

In the first game, Burris picked up the pitching win and Flynn recorded the save. The Cardinals held a 3-2 lead when they scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-2 advantage.

LaFountain led the Cardinals with a single and double, while Bouyea chipped in with a two-run double.

Scott Baker paced the Miners with three hits, including two doubles and two RBI, while losing pitcher David Waldron added a single and double for the Miners (4-4).

SARANAC — Both games between the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx and Airborne Speedway Padres went down to the wire.

The Timberjaxx rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh for a 7-4 victory in the opener, while the Padres broke a 2-all tie with two runs in the sixth for a 4-3 win in the second game.

D.J. Barber went the distance for the pitching win in Game 1 and helped his own cause with two hits, including a triple. Aaron Goldfarb rapped two triples and Jimmy Knight added two doubles.

Nick Desroches led the Padres with three hits, while Mark Eggleston and Chris Markwica each added two. Donny Coolidge had a triple, while Eggleston and losing pitcher Matt Rivers each doubled.

In Game 2, Markwica and Jeremy Desroches had singles in the sixth inning and ended up scoring on errors to provide the margin of difference.

Five players accounted for a hit each for the Padres (3-5) and Jeremy Desroches picked up the pitching win in relief of Joey Painter.

Goldfarb, who had a big day at the plate with five combined hits, rapped out three of the eight hits for the Timberjaxx (3-5). Andrew Price went the distance in taking the pitching loss.
