---- — PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State Cardinals scored arguably their biggest victory of the season thus far on Sunday, rallying to defeat Norwich University 4-2 at Stafford Arena.
And yet, Kevin Houle’s unbeaten skaters actually slipped slightly in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online rankings out Monday. Plattsburgh (11-0-1) remained No. 1 with 12 first-place votes and 147 points, but the next three teams in the Women’s Div. III poll gained points on the Cardinals.
Gustavus Adolphus (10-0-0), held on to its three first-place votes and picked up one more point for 133. No. 3 Elmira College (13-1-1) made the biggest move, gaining 11 points to 118 while fourth-ranked Middlebury College (8-1-1) tacked on eight points to 111.
Wisconsin-River Falls (7-4-2) traded places with Norwich (6-3-2) with the Cadets falling from fifth to sixth.
The dramatic come-from-behind victory over Norwich Sunday kicked off a stretch of six straight home games, including a pair with Elmira on Jan. 19-20. Oswego visits Stafford for two games this weekend, followed by Williams College on Jan. 16.
After a two-game visit to Cortland, the Cardinals return for three more home games with Middlebury in on Jan. 30.
Men at home
The Plattsburgh State men (9-5-1), who fell one place to No. 10 in the latest USCHO rankings following a 5-2 loss to Castleton (Vt.) State, will host two significant contests this weekend. Middlebury visits Stafford Arena on Friday with Williams in Saturday. Middlebury has fallen into honorable mention, but Williams joined the top 15 this week at No. 13.
The Div. III men’s hockey rankings went through some big changes Monday after the top three teams all lost on Saturday. Neumann College dumped Norwich, 5-3, in the Northfield Bank Tournament final, Utica College shocked Oswego 6-0 and Concordia of Minnesota edged Wisconsin-Eau Claire 2-1.
Norwich managed to hang on at No. 1, but Oswego and Eau Claire tumbled to fifth and sixth. St. Norbert advanced two places to second and surprising Hobart moved up one to third. Bowdoin College also gained, from sixth to fourth.
