Looking Back (July 15-21) 10 YEARS AGO (2001)

Westport's Irv Mauran is in the sulky as Landmark Honor, a 5-year-old gelding, sets a track record for pacers of 1:52 at Plainridge (Mass.) Race Course.

John Mousseau steps down as Seton Catholic girls' basketball coach after two 19-win seasons, a division title and sectional championship in 3 years at the varsity helm.

Mike Rivers and Dave Waldron each drive in 3 runs to back winning pitcher Bryan Waite as the Clinton County Mariners whip the Massena Federals 10-1 to win the Alex Turner Memorial Baseball Tournament. Joe Light tosses a 3-hit shutout of Brockville to advance the Mariners to the final.

Liz Jackstadt, fifth seat on the Ithaca College women's crew, earns All-American honors in rowing for the second straight year.

Peru's Kris Doorey is named baseball coach at Plattsburgh State while Champlain's Jeremy Agor is selected to be the school's Sports Information Director.

Jonathan Edwards and Tory Bouyea combine on a 3-hitter with 12 strikeouts and Dylan Raville drives in 6 runs with 4 hits as Michigans Plus wallops Pepsi 11-1 to complete a two-game sweep of the A Division series in the Plattsburgh Little League championships.

20 YEARS AGO (1991)

Blaine Applegate and James Ziglor each score 2 touchdowns as the Plattsburgh North Stars defeat the Moscow Swans 43-0 before 5,200 fans at Bailey Ave. park. Mike LaBarre and Chris McGill also score for the first-year football team.

The Gentlemen's and the Adirondack slo-pitch softball leagues split their 2-game all-star series. Ed Richardson and J.R. Rulmann go 4-for-4 and Denny LaPorte gets the game-winning hit as the Gentlemen's loop wins the A game 9-6 while the Adirondacks, behind the 5-hit pitching of Larry Barcomb win the B battle 13-1.

Kathy Cameron scores the game-winning goal to lift unbeaten T.C. Sports to a 3-2 win over Mousseau-Devins in North Country Women's Soccer League play.

Pete Longley pitches a 3-hitter, Stephen Peryea hits a home run and Mike Bordeau and Kris Doorey add 2 hits each as American Legion Post 20 defeats Amsterdam 6-2 in the opening round of the District IV tournament.

Jay Marsden goes 4-for-4 and Joe Rockhill 3-for-4 to lead the Lake Placid Post 326 Adirondacks to a 14-3 thrashing of Ogdensburg in the American Legion district playoffs.

25 YEARS AGO (1986)

Matt Sames pitches a 3-hitter with 13 strikeouts and Gary Baker drives in 4 runs to lead American Legion Post 20 to a 3-1 win over South Glens Falls.

Jim Willauer scores 4 goals and Dale Rabideau, 2, to lead Adams Glass to a 7-4 win over The Friendly Tavern in the North Country Soccer League.

Walt Worth tallies 4 times and Darren Gough contributes 2 goals and 3 assists to the Adirondack Hawks' 9-0 win over Keeseville in Adirondack Amateur Soccer Associatiion play.

Mike Loden strikes out 9 and Kyle Burdo bangs out 3 doubles as Dairy Queen dumps J.D. Dame 13-6 to complete a 2-game sweep of the Plattsburgh Little League championship series.

Tom Gates pitches a 5-hitter and Rick Duprey drives in 3 runs in Peru's 5-3 win over Redford that spoils the River Rats' bid for a perfect season in CVBL play. Alan Rock has a 2-run double for the Rats.

Dan Phillips socks 8 homers and Jim Davison goes 21-for-26 to lead The Bowl Mart to a second-place finish in the New York State Class B Amateur Softball Association Tournament. Dan Trombley is the defensive star for Bowl Mart.

Rigsbee's Auction places fifth in Class C of the state softball tourney with Steve Criss and Allen Fessette the hitting stars and Lonnie Cleland the defensive standout.

30 YEARS AGO (1981)

Missy O'Dell and Kathy Laramee combine on a no-hitter in a losing effort as Currier Press tops Hyde Fuel 3-1 in Saranac Lake Patty League softball. Karen Minehan has a triple and Heather Clark a single for Hyde's. Winning pitcher Lisa Oakes and Angie Mose combine to strike out 13.

Rae Hebert tosses a no-hitter and belts a grand slam while Sue Lombard goes 3-for-4 as the Rouses Point pee wees top Altona 16-0.

Ticonderoga's Jim Kent comes in third in the 800 while Keeseville's Keith Brelia is third in the 400 at the District I Junior Olympics track & field meet.

Keith Rebideau knocks in 4 runs with 3 hits to lead Cadyville to a 7-6 win over Malone in the final of the Larry Doyle baseball tournament. Mike McDonald gets 2 hits for Malone.

Lake Placid's Chris Lussi repeats as girls' 18 & under champion of the Plattsburgh Junior Tennis Tournament. Tim DiPrinzio wins the boys' 16 & under while John Garrant takes the 14 & under crown.

Russ Lester strikes out 8 batters in 3 innings and Chris Lautenschuetz and Neil Keysor get 2 hits apiece to lead the Saranac pee wees to a 13-5 win over West Plattsburgh.

40 YEARS AGO (1971)

Plattsburgh's Raney Ellis places second in the 40th Annual New York State Archery Championships.

Don Huntley rips a grand slam and Alvin Gates comes on to pitch 4 innings of scoreless relief as Westport-Elizabethtown knocks off previously unbeaten Lyon Mountain 14-11 in CVBL action. Cliff Legacy, Gates and Kelsey contribute 3 hits each.

Debbie Pellerin and Vicki Viele get 3 hits each in Saranac-Redford's 12-11 win over previously undefeated Keeseville.

Ricky McCorry pitches a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts as the West Plattsburgh pee wees defeat Cliff Haven 13-0. James Gordon gets a homer and double, Pete Goddeau chips in with 2 doubles and Jeff Sears adds a double and single.

50 YEARS AGO (1961)

Marcia Hendrix hammers a grand slam and Donne Mae Loquash adds a homer to lead the Cadyville Babe Ruth girls to a 20-9 win over Peru.

Ray Mousseau enjoys quite a day in Sheridan Iron Works 4-1, 20-10 sweep of Kaufman Lumber. He is the winning pitcher in both games and goes 5-for-7.

Dave Collins pitches a one-hitter and chips in with 3 hits as Cadyville tops Keeseville 7-2 in Senior League play.

Dick Sabourin and Dennis Reid combine to no-hit Condo's in a 4-1 Bay View victory in Plattsburgh Little League action. Sabourin also belts a 3-run homer.

60 YEARS AGO (1951)

Wes Kimball wrestles a 20-pound muskellunge to the shore of the Great Chazy River after the 39-inch tiger snaps the tackle.

Malone defeats the Plattsburgh Carlings 12-4 behind the 4-hit pitching of little Don Davis, the 15-year-old Detroit high-school hurler.

Benny Jock strikes out 18 and helps his cause with an RBI single as Morrisonville beats the Plattsburgh Genesees 2-0.

Bill Agonier of Plattsburgh wins the featured motorcycle race at Richelieu Park.

Robert Quinn, PR director at Champlain College, shoots a net 73 to win the Elks Lovell Cup at North Country Golf Club. Bill Gioiosa is runner-up.

70 YEARS AGO (1941)

Joe Gilbo gets 3 hits and Rabatoy, 2, to lead Port Henry to a 5-4 win over the Ticonderoga Colonials in CVBL play. Mike Fosco leads the Colonials with 3 hits while Johnnie Blanchard and Russ Sage get 2 each.
