LYON MOUNTAIN — The Lyon Mountain Miners recorded a doubleheader sweep of the Meron's Expos Sunday to move a step closer towards clinching the Champlain Valley Baseball League regular season title.
The Miners rolled to a 17-7 win in six innings in the first game and rallied for a 7-6 decision in eight innings in the second contest.
Lyon Mountain (14-2) owns a two-game lead over the Plattsburgh Cardinals (12-4), who split their twinbill with the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx. The two teams will close out the regular season Sunday in Lyon Mountain, with the Miners needing one win to wrap up the crown and top seed in the playoffs.
In Game 1, Kris Chase, Tom Kowalowski and Kyle Kowalowski led the Miners with three hits each, with Chase getting a double and three RBI. Nick Chase added two hits in support of winning pitcher David Waldron and Reilly Lawless cracked a three-run homer.
The Expos scored five runs in the top of the third before the Miners came back with six in the bottom of the inning, capped by Lawless' homer. Lyon Mountain then put the game out of reach with nine in the fifth.
Mark Passino led the Expos with a home run, double and three RBI. Matt Meunier added a double and single, while Andy Gooch drove in two runs.
In Game 2, the Expos held a 6-1 lead at one time. But, the Miners scored three in the bottom of the sixth and then two in the seventh to tie it. An infield error with nobody out and bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth produced the game-winning run.
Lawless, Nick Chase and Kris Chase rapped out two hits each for the Miners, with Lawless getting a double. Justin Besaw was the winning pitcher in relief.
Mark Rexford paced the Expos (5-9) with four hits, including a double and triple, while Meunier and Gooch chipped in with two hits each. Tyler Mesec pitched well for the Expos in a losing effort.

PLATTSBURGH — The Fourth Ward Timberjaxx (7-9) wrapped up third place in the standings by defeating the Plattsburgh Cardinals in their first game of the day.
D.J. Barber did it all for the Timberjaxx as he went the distance for the pitching win, allowing just two seventh-inning runs, and getting a single, double and two RBI at the plate.
Josh Chapman added a double.
Tory Bouyea and Alex Lafountain led the Cardinals with two hits each.
In Game 2, Dustin Currier finished with a single, two doubles and three RBI to power the Cardinals to the split. Lafountain had two hits and two RBI. Craig Bujold went six innings to pick up the win.
Barber continued his big day with three more hits, while Tim Lafave doubled for the Timberjaxx.

PLATTSBURGH — Jimmy Ryan rapped out seven hits in the twinbill and Chris Markwica added four, including a grand slam, three-run homer and eight RBI, as the Airborne Speedway Padres (6-10) took two from the Fourth Ward A's (2-12).
Ryan had three hits in Game 1 and added four more in Game 2, while Markwica homered in each game.
Mark Eggleston finished with six hits, with a triple and homer, Jeff Norton five hits, including a double and homer, Shane Perrotte four hits, including a triple and homer, and Matt Rivers four hits, with a double and triple.
In the opener, Frank Brogna tossed a two-hit shutout over five innings and struck out seven. He also helped his cause with two hits. Eggleston drove in four runs and Norton added three RBI
Matt Seymour was the winning pitcher in Game 2, with Rivers getting the save.
Kevin Jessey and Joe Kowalowski had the lone A's hits in the opener. Jessey homered twice, Gus Terry rapped a grand slam and both Brett Gilman and Kowalowski chipped in with two hits apiece in Game 2.
