25 locals compete in Special Olympics summer games

PLATTSBURGH — Twenty-five athletes from Clinton and Essex Counties participated in the New York State Special Olympic Summer Games held at Utica College.

Athletes competed in basketball, tennis, track & field and swimming.

In basketball, the Adirondack Thunder won the silver medal. The Thunder won an exciting 36-30 overtime game over the Red Raiders. The Thunder were down by three points with seven seconds left in regulation. Mike Wells hit a halfcourt shot to tie the game, at 29-all, and force overtime.

The Thunder was then defeated by the Albany Patriots in the final game of Division 3. Team members include: Don Caza, Ian Bell, Steve Williams, Mike Wells, Joe Therrien, Matt Thomson, Ron Cahoon, Steve Genther, Leo Garrant and coach Anne Slattery.

In tennis, Mike Micanko won a gold medal, Alex Astwood and Andy Lemieux bronze medals, and Bill Bradley was fifth.

In track & field, Jasmine Olsen won a gold in the 100 meters and gold in the softball throw; Jessica Mehan bronze in the 50 meters and gold in the softball throw; Krystal Stewart fourth in the 100- meter walk; Mike Fronheiser gold in the 50 meters and gold in the 100 meters; Bob Tyrell silver in the 100-meter walk and fourth place in the 50-meter walk; and Ginny Cahoon silver in the softball throw and silver in the 100-meter walk.

In swimming, Pam Garrant won gold in the 25-meter freestyle; Emily Corron bronze in the 25-meter freestyle; Justine Ellstrom silver in the 25-meter freestyle; and Reisa Warren, bronze in the 25-meter freestyle and bronze in the 25-meter backstroke.
