ECAC moves to Olympic ice

LAKE PLACID — Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference hockey signed a three-year venue contract with the Olympic Regional Development Authority.

The move to Olympic ice begins in March 2014.

“The 1980 Rink - Herb Brooks Arena will be the fifth different venue the men’s championship in the league’s history,” hockey organizers said in a statement issued Tuesday.

Previously, the spring hockey conference has played at Boston Arena; Boston Garden; the Olympic Arena in Lake Placid; Pepsi Arena/Times Union Center and at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

“We in Lake Placid and the Olympic Authority have always remained supportive of the ECAC Hockey, its members athletes, coaches and fans,” ORDA CEO Ted Blazer said in announcing the contract.

“We are excited to once again greet the teams, alumni and fans back to this unbelievable winter sports and hockey town. We are thrilled with the decision and welcome back the championship.”

In a press release, ECAC Hockey Commissioner Steve Hagwell said Lake Placid has always been one of the special hockey places in the United States.

“The combination of the warm welcome from the surrounding community, aura of the venue and general support will be easily absorbed by fans and students alike. The location serves as a prime choice for enhancing the overall student-athlete experience.”

Herb Brooks Arena has 8,500 seats to welcome the 12 top men’s ice

hockey teams and their fans for their crowning spring competition.

“As a destination, it’s wonderful that this event is returning to Lake Placid,” Kimberly Rielly, director of communications for the Lake Placid Convention and Visitors’ Bureau said in a press release.

“It not only occurs at a good time of year, enhancing the winter sports visitation in March, but it also attracts and introduces our destination to a quality, affluent demographic market.”

ECAC Hockey teams come from 12 of the prestigious institutions – Brown University, Clarkson University, Colgate University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, Quinnipiac University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, St. Lawrence University, Union College and Yale University.
