Chateaugay girls claim East Division

Tupper beats St. Regis Falls

MADRID — Chateaugay got the early jump Thursday night and wrapped up the Northern Athletic Conference East Division girls' basketball championship with a 54-43 win over Madrid-Waddington.

The outcome put the Bulldogs' record at 11-1 in the league and 15-3 overall.

"If we didn't win (Thursday), it would have created a three-way tie for first place between us, Madrid-Waddington and Tupper Lake," Chateaugay coach Chris Reynolds said. "This was a good win for us in a tough place to play against a good team."

Makayla Fleury tossed in eight points in the first quarter as the Bulldogs went on a 19-5 spurt. The Yellow Jackets were never able to make a serious run after that.

Fleury finished with a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Courtney Boyea added 13 points, including four 3-pointers.

Abby Barnes chipped in with 10 points, Katie Beach eight points, Hannah Cook six assists and five steals, and Alexis Beach four assists and five steals.

Shelby Gausby led the Yellow Jackets with 12 points and was followed by Brittany Pierce with 10, Katie Marcellus nine and Bridget Beldock eight.
