Rec department to offer programs
PLATTSBURGH — The Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department will be offering the following programs free to any town resident during the school vacation.
Family ice skating- Free ice time is available to all town residents, young and old, at the Plattsburgh State Field House on Feb. 21, 22 and 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. Skate rentals will be available free of charge.
Archery- Instructional archery classes will be held for children ages 8 to 13. The classes will be held at Gander Mountain from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on February 21 and 23. Free equipment will be provided. Space is limited and pre-registration is required by calling the recreation department, at 562-6860.
Beartown Family Ski Night- The Towns of Plattsburgh and Beekmantown are sponsoring a Family Fun Ski Night on February 20 at Beartown, weather permitting. This includes an evening of free skiing, snowboarding and tubing from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. There will be another Family Fun Ski Night on March 9 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Participants will have to provide their own equipment. There will be 20-percent discounts for ski and snowboard rentals available from Viking Ski-Board-Cycle. You must bring your own inflatable tube. Snowmobile Safety Course- The course will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on February 21 and 24. New York State law requires that any youth between the ages of 10 and 18 must first complete its Safety Training Course in order to operate a snowmobile on any property other than their parents' or guardians'. There is no fee for the course, which will be held at the Town of Plattsburgh Office complex located at 151 Banker Road. Participants must attend both sessions. Anyone wishing to take the course is asked to register with the recreation office prior to the first session.
Colby Classic Fishing Derby March 3, 4
SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Fish and Game Club will host the 28th Annual Colby Classic Ice Fishing Derby on Saturday and Sunday, March 3 and 4, at Lake Colby in the Village of Saranac Lake.
The derby starters at 7 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. each day. Contestants can pre-register for the derby at the Blue Line Sports Shop in Saranac Lake, or on derby days at the Lake Colby beach house across from the Adirondack Medical Center on Route 86. Derby Day registration begins at 6:45 a.m. each day.
The registration fee is $7 per adult per day or $10 per adult for both days. Youths under 16 years of age can register for $3 per day or $5 for both days.
Contestants will be eligible to win prizes in the trout, salmon, perch and northern pike categories with separate prizes awarded to adults and youths. The tournament grand prize is a charter-fishing trip for two people with Fish Doctor Charters of Mexico. Door prizes and raffles will also be rewarded.
Fifteen tagged fish will be stocked in Lake Colby prior to the derby courtesy of the NYSDEC - Lake Clear fish hatchery. A $100 prize will be awarded to any lucky fisherman who catches a tagged fish during the derby.
Bait will be available at the Blue Line Sports Shop in Saranac Lake and the River Road Bait Shop in Bloomingdale during the event. For further information, call Derby Chairman Cecilia Martin at 201-4009 or Co-Chairman Patrick Farrell at 891-3319.
Visconti grabs another rifle match win
PLATTSBURGH — Twenty-one shooters competed in this weekend's NRA four position rifle match this past weekend at the Plattsburgh Rod and Gun Club.
Peter Visconti of Champlain once again out-shot all competitors taking place overall with a 789 our of 800. Visconti and Thomas of Essex Junction went shot for shot both shooting 200 prone, 200 Sitting and 197 kneeling. Visconti won the match with a 192 standing over Thomas's 189.
Frank Richards of Mooers took first in the Marksman division with a 768.
Andrew Visconti was the high junior shooter with a 733.
The next NRA Rifle Match is scheduled for Saturday, March 3. Call Norbert Yakey at 298-5161 to register.

Field House Announces Public Skating
PLATTSBURGH — Officials at the Plattsburgh State Field House have announced public skating sessions that are scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. on the following dates: Feb. 12, 18, 19 and 26.
Admission is $2 for the public and $1 for Plattsburgh State students, faculty and staff with a valid college identification. Skate rentals are available at the same rates.
