Eagles capture CVAC title

ROUSES POINT — Cole Carter found the back of the net during a scramble in overtime to give Beekmantown a 3-2 win over Northeastern Clinton and its second straight Champlain Valley Athletic Conference boys' hockey title.

The Eagles (14-1-2, 7-0-1) have 15 points with two games left and own the tiebreaker against Lake Placid, the only team that could catch them.

"I want to congratulate our players and everyone involved in the program for winning the CVAC championship with a great effort (Wednesday)," Beekmantown coach Justin Frechette said. "The past couple weeks we've had a lot of adversity with flu, sickness, injuries. I was pleased with how the boys responded."

Kyle Bisonette gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead 6:35 into the third period, but Alex Duffy knotted the score less than two minutes later.

Carter tallied the winner 2:07 into the extra period.

"There was a scramble in front of our net," Northeastern Clinton coach Rob Francis said. "We didn't clear the zone. It was a bouncing puck, guys were diving all over the place and one of their guys managed to get it over Kyle (McCarthy)."

Nate Foster assisted on all three Beekmantown goals, and Carter finished with two points. Dustin Plumadore made 31 saves for the win.

Austin Bradish opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game, and Northeastern Clinton's Reece Tucker answered not long after. Both goals were scored during power plays.

McCarthy had 23 stops in the Cougars' net.

"It was back-and-forth hockey. Could've gone either way," Francis said. "I'm real proud of our boys. We've played five games in a week, and we have a short bench right now. I couldn't be happier with the effort."
