Depo, Driscoll shine for PSU track and field squads

PLATTSBURGH — Ben Depo placed fourth behind three Division I athletes in the heptathlon at the Ithaca Bomber Invitational, setting a new school record with a score of 4,622. Depo was one of three Cardinals to compete at Ithaca, while the remainder of the Plattsburgh contingent traveled to the Dartmouth Indoor Classic this weekend.

With Depo's performance, he is now ranked first in the ECAC and is fifth on the national Division III leaderboard.

Plattsburgh's Alex Choi and Chris Russo also made the trip to Ithaca. Choi placed 15th with a score of 3,540 while Russo finished 18th with 3,184.

At Dartmouth, Plattsburgh had three athletes finish in the top 10 in the 200-meter dash. Brian Drollette led the Cardinals with a sixth-place finish in 23.32 seconds. Nate Williams followed in eighth and Kevin Mercer was 10th. Mercer also finished third in the 400-meter run with a time of 51.31 seconds.

The Cardinals' 4x200 meter relay team of Drollette, Mercer, Josh Garren and Nate Williams finished second, qualifying for ECACs with a time of 1:32.17.

In field events at Dartmouth, Devin Scott finished eighth in the high jump and Ryan Barcomb placed fifth in the long jump. Anthony Russo qualified for SUNYACs in the shot put and weight throw with 10th and 12th place finishes, respectively.

Driscoll wins individual title

Kelley Driscoll was the top performer on the Plattsburgh State women's track and field team at the Dartmouth Indoor Classic over the weekend.

Driscoll won the 3,000-meter run with an ECAC-qualifying time of 10:26.02, which was also a personal best. Stefanie Braun also had a nice showing, achieving a personal best in the mile run. Braun finished eighth with a time of 5:13.86 to also qualify for the ECAC meet. Braun also competed in the 800-meter run, finishing 18th in 2:31.

In the 400-meter run, Joanne TeRiele took seventh place in 1:01.97 to round out the Cardinals' top ten finishers in track events.

Ashley Gadway led the Plattsburgh women in field events, setting personal bests in the shot put and weight throw. Gadway placed 10th in the shot put with a 10.35 meter throw. She finished 13th in the weight throw with a 12.84 meter throw.

Both marks qualified Gadway for the SUNYAC Championships at the end of the month.

The Cardinals return to action this weekend at Boston University for the Valentine Invitational.
