Bombers narrowly edge PHS in boys' hockey

LAKE PLACID — Eddie Kane scored what proved to be the game-winner late in the third period as Lake Placid held off Plattsburgh High for a 5-4 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference boys' hockey win Tuesday.

Troy Jacques scored twice and Keegan Barney added a goal and two assists for the Blue Bombers, who entered the third period holding a 3-1 lead.

The Hornets pulled to within one when Alex Maston scored 1:56 in on assists from Jack Tolosky and Eric Bechard.

Both teams traded goals, with Barney scoring a short-handed goal for Lake Placid and Tolosky lighting the lamp for the Hornets.

Kane put the Blue Bombers (13-4-1, 4-2-1) up 5-3 in the final minute with an short-handed, empty-net goal. It proved necessary as Bechard found the back of the net for Plattsburgh with 22 seconds left.

"I thought we had a really good second period, but we didn't maintain that level of play in the third period," Lake Placid coach Keith Clark said."

Robbie Knowles had a strong game in net for Plattsburgh High (4-11-1, 2-7-0), turning away 31 shots.

Jeffry Smith made 10 saves for Lake Placid, which held a 36-14 advantage in shots.

"I think any time you play a quality team such as Lake Placid, you need to play an entire game," Plattsburgh coach Jamie Reidy said. "I think we played well in the first and third and didn't have any effort at all in the second period.

"I think any time you play a team like that and give up two short-handed goals, it's tough to win on the road."
