Cardinals rout Dragons

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team, despite a huge advantage in shots on goal, had trouble finding the back of the net in Saturday's 3-1 victory over Cortland State.

Sunday, scoring goals wasn't a problem for the Cardinals.

Teal Gove, Emma Rutherford and Kylie Klassen scored two goals each as Plattsburgh State skated to a 10-0 victory over the Red Dragons in ECAC West play at the Stafford Ice Arena.

The weekend sweep put the Cardinals' overall record at 15-4-2 and ECAC West mark at 13-1-2 heading into Wednesday's home showdown with Norwich University in a key non-conference game.

"Sometimes the puck goes in the net for you," Plattsburgh State head coach Kevin Houle said. "That made all the difference today. We were able to take advantage.

"I'm sure Cortland used up a lot of their energy in yesterday's game. And their goalie had to be tired today. The key for us today was to get a couple of early goals."

Plattsburgh State spread out the scoring with three goals in the first, four in the second and three in the third.

It was Senior Day for Cardinals' Klassen, Erika Shaubel and Justine Fisher. Helen Giroux is also in her final year with the Cardinals and she was recognized with her class last year.

Klassen finished the day with two goals and two assists, Fisher scored the Cardinals' first goal of the game, and Shaubel picked up three assists.

Melissa McIver, Jordan Caldwell and Allison Era also scored goals for Plattsburgh State, which held a 58-14 advantage in shots on goal.

Fisher, McIver and Caldwell scored in the first period to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.

Gove and Rutherford, who also had two assists in the game, each tallied twice in the second stanza to make it 7-0 before Klassen got her two goals in the third. Era's goal closed out the scoring.

"We played hard today," Houle, who picked up his 200th-career coaching win on Saturday, said. "The girls played hard all weekend — they just have more to show for it on the scoreboard today.

"They were able to keep up their level of intensity and that's important to do. I was happy with the effort."

Houle gave starting goaltender Sydney Aveson the day off Sunday and Kelsey Neumann (10 saves) and Ally Ross (4 saves) combined for the shutout in net.

Katie Double, who faced 118 shots on goal in the two games over the weekend, finished with 48 stops on Sunday for the Red Dragons (4-13-1, 2-11-1).

There were only two penalties whistled in the game — one on each team.
