LAKE PLACID — Like the sport of boxing, junior bobsledding Sunday at the Empire State Winter Games, to keep the competitions equitable, came in lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight divisions.
Team Van Hass took gold in the lightweight category with four trips down Mount Van Hoevenberg that totaled three minutes, 20.23 seconds. Comprised of Becca Hass, of Fair Haven, and Bailey Van Ness, of Lake Placid, the winners were second after the first heat, but dominated the final three runs with the best times in each.
Cool Runnings had the early advantage, but Noah Sweeney and Daryl Hillman, both of Whitehall, were overtaken and settled for the silver medal in 3:20.64. Night Train, a name borrowed from the 2010 Olympic gold medal winners, saw Lake Placid sledders Bryan Bryne and Patrick Quinn take bronze in 3:24.75.
Stars and Stripes came from behind to grab the title in the middleweight class. The sled, with driver Brandon Ruocco, of Jay, and Chris Roy, from Lake Placid, was second after two of four heats, before improving their starts in the last two runs for a winning time of 3:14.28.
The Red Devils raced to gold among the heavyweights. Hunter Church, of Cadyville, and John Andre, of Saranac, won three of the four individual legs and registered a collective time of 3:12.13.
Silver medalists were Saranac Lake's Red Team with Zoe Tyler and Nick Sweeney in 3:14.22.
Team Yesterday was the bronze medal winner with Killian Ryan, of Saranac Lake, and Gabe Woodward, of Gabriels, aboard.
Women's hockey
LAKE PLACID — Adirondack scored the first two goals of the contest in the opening period Sunday and never looked back as they defeated Western New York, 4-2, for the gold medal in women's hockey at the Empire State Winter Games.
Katie Stack, of Batavia, scored for Western New York just :30 into the middle period to bring her team within a goal. But an unassisted marker by Christin Powers, of Canton, at 5:13, followed by a Stephanie Holmes tally at 2:21 of the third, gave Adirondack a three-goal cushion.
Holmes, of Lake Placid, was assisted by Lennox, who was joined in the tournament by her daughter Mackenzie. It marked the first time in ESWG women's hockey history that a mother-daughter combination had been on the ice together. The duo collaborated on a scoring play in Saturday's tournament action.
Ski, snowboard cross
WILMINGTON — Whiteface Mountain held the ski and snowboard cross competition Saturday afternoon on Wolf and Wolf run.
Brian Corcoran, of Northport, came in second in the time trial but won the boy's 13-15 Scholastic skiing competition. The silver medalist was Erik Sparkowski, of Keene, and the bronze medal winner was Jake Wenn, of Jay.
Skier Shannon Corcoran, of Northport, won the girl's 16-18 Scholastic competition, while Zoe Tyler, of Saranac Lake, came in second.
In the open class men snowboarding competition, the gold medal winner was Donny Malone, of Saugerties, who came in seventh place in the time trial, but upset the field in the finals to win the gold medal.
The open class women's snowboard race was won by Carly Harrington, of Buffalo, who took the time trial and then went on to collect the gold medal.
Snow shoeing
PAUL SMITHS — The Empire State Winter Games snow shoeing competition came to Paul Smith's College and the Visitor Interpretive Center Saturday when uncooperative weather forced the event from Saranac Lake.
Males and females raced in seven divisions at the five kilometer distance, with Rae Tobey, of Cazenovia, winning the girl's 15-19 age group.
Tobey won a second gold medal when she raced to the head of the field in the 800 meter event.
Caleb Strong, of Victor, took the men's 50-64 year old age group in 24:24. Doug Hazelden, of Bloomingdale, was runner-up in 24:37, with Robert Kowalik, of Akron, in the bronze medal position in 30:43.
Eric Kowalik, also of Paul Smiths, won the men's 20-34 age race in 23:21. Derek Scott, another Paul Smiths racer, was second in 27:17, with Taylor McKenna, of Lake Placid, the bronze medal winner in 33:49.
The biggest field of the day was found in the 400 meter sprint. David Kucia, of Paul Smith's, bested seven others in one minute, 20.71 seconds. Hulbert won another silver medal in 1:27.13, while Clemente registered 1:32.25 for the bronze medal.
LUGE
LAKE PLACID — Clear and cold weather on Saturday night led to fast early morning luge races.
With temperatures still below zero on Mount Van Hoevenberg's twisting three-fourths of a mile long course, Justin Krewson, of Eastport, triumphed Sunday morning, winning the gold in the Open Junior Men category. Krewson had the best two runs, totaling one minute 30.211 seconds.
Raychel Germaine, of Roswell, Ga., who was previously given the honor of lighting the cauldron at the Empire State Winter Games Opening Ceremony, was victorious on Sunday, winning the gold in the youth A women's category. She raced to the best two-heat time of 1:32.620. Shannon Knapp, of Marcy, finished with a silver medal and had a two run time of 1:33.664. The bronze medalist, Hannah Miller, of Rome, completed the race with a time of 1:34.193.
In the youth open men category Bailey Bohl, of Potsdam, had a time of 1:37.161 winning the gold medal. Justin Taylor, of Newark, Del., achieved a time of 1:37.578 winning the silver medal. The bronze medalist Liam Chaskey, of Plattsburgh, had a time of 1:38.486.
Sidney Axton, of Port Byron, beat out Rachel Hollander, of Lake Placid, and Lucy Jenkins, of Canton, for first place in the open women's category. Gold medalist Axton had the winning time of 1:37.711. Hollander had a time of 1:38.221. Bronze medalist Lucy Jenkins won her bronze medal in a time of 1:38.743.
In the masters division Matt Gannon, of Lake Placid, raced to the gold in 1:31.161. Second place competitor Bruce Norman, of Burnt Hills, had a time of 1:32.095.
SLOPESTYLE
WILMINGTON — Slopestyle is among the new events of the 2012 Empire State Winter Games.
Slopestyle competitions judge a skier or snowboarder on the difficulty of a trick while getting the highest amplitude off the jumps. The beautiful sunny day at Whiteface Mountain gave all the athletes the right vibe for the competition that was held in the Brookside terrain park.
Among 13-15 year old scholastic skiers in the male category Will Goody, of Queensbury, won a gold medal with a final result of 7.4 points. Silver medalist Jake Wenn, of Jay, was right behind with a score of 7.3. With a score of 6.77 Erik Sparkowski, of Keene, received a bronze medal.
Jason Castle, of Ilion, was victorious in the skier boy's 16-18 category with a final result of 8.23 putting him in first place. Peter Palumbo, of Gansevoort, beat out Oliver Holmes, of Saranac Lake, for the silver with a score of 7.77. Holmes had a final result of 6.47.
Caitlyn Shabloski, of Mc Kean, received the gold medal with a score of 2.33 in snowboard girl's 13-15 category. Hannah Finicle, of Bay Village, was a gold medalist with a score of 3.73 in the snowboard girl's 16-18 scholastic division. In the snowboard open class ladies Carly Harrington, of Buffalo, won the gold after being given a final tally of 5.0.
Donny Malone, of Saugerties, finished with a 2.7 gaining the gold medal in the snowboard open class division.
Adaptive biathlon
LAKE PLACID — Adaptive biathlon made its debut at these Empire State Winter Games Saturday with men and women competing in three divisions at the Olympic Ski Jumping Complex.
Organizers created a nearly one kilometer loop, and competitors were required to shoot four sessions.
Patrick Standen won the gold medal in the sit-ski division, in a total time of 27 minutes, 45.4 seconds. The silver medal went to Dan Riley in 29:41.0. Jake Schmalzreidt of picked up the bronze in 30.46.5.
Adaptive alpine skiing
WILMINGTON — Athletes competed in the adaptive alpine skiing event Sunday in the Empire State Winter Games. The competition was held on Whiteface Mountain's Draper's Drop and the Fox trail on a beautiful day.
Cameron Shaw Doran, of Franconia, N.H., prevailed in the sit-ski men's open division with a time of one minute 8.30 seconds for the gold. Aaron Davis, of Manchester, N.H., won the silver with a time of 1:09.26. Bronze medalist Geoff Krill, of North Woodstock, N.H., had a time of 1:17.95.
In the sit-ski women's open Lacey Heward, of Barrington, N.H., took the gold with a time of 1:06.82.
