PLATTSBURGH — Kastle Birch scored two goals Friday night and Northeastern Clinton skated past Plattsburgh High School, 5-2, in the championship game of the Saranac Hockey Tournament.
Reece Tucker, James Guay and Ben Leduc also scored for the Cougars, who held a 2-1 lead after one period and a 4-2 edge after two.
"We're getting more pucks to the net and the guys are going to the net," NCCS coach Rob Francis said. "Good things are happening.
"It was a great team effort. We fell behind but the guys were able to bounce right back."
Birch's first goal of the game, at 13:05 of the opening period, put the Cougars ahead to stay, at 2-1.
Alex Maston scored both goals for the Hornets, who were outshot by a 36-21 margin.
Kyle McCarthy stopped 19 shots in the NCCS nets and Rob Knowles made 31 saves for PHS, which trailed by a 3-2 score midway through the second period.
Consolation Northwood Prep 2 Saranac 1
Justin Felhaber scored both of his team's goals as the Northwood Prep high-school level team edged out a win over the host Chiefs.
Felhaber tied the game at 3:12 of the first period and won it at 13:01 of the third.
Saranac got off to a good start when Alex Sarazen scored from Matt McCasland with just 50 seconds gone in the first stanza.
The Chiefs held a 36-19 advantage in shots, with Cory Leonard making 35 saves for Northwood and Zach Lareau 17 for the Chiefs.
"The kids went to the net and we produced a lot of offensive chances," Saranac coach Ed Davis said. "We did a lot of good things. Their goalie played well and we got a couple of bad bounces."

LAKE PLACID — Eddie Kane scored four goals and the Blue Bombers recorded a high-scoring win over the rival Red Storm in the opening round of the Lake Placid Winter Carnival Tournament.
Shane McNierney, Nzoni Thompson, Keegan Barney and Dustin Jacques also scored for Lake Placid.
McNierney's goal early in the second period broke a 2-all tie and put the Blue Bombers ahead to stay.
Devin Darrah tallied two goals, while Kyle Dora and Grant Strack each added one for Saranac Lake.
"It was a real emotional game and I thought our kids played with more composure as the game went on," Lake Placid coach Keith Clark said.
"And that was the difference for us. We just played a smarter team game as the game went on, and that certainly helped.
Tucker Angelopoulos recorded 20 saves in net for Lake Placid, which finished with a 32-24 advantage in shots on goal.
