Mazdzer, Mortensen, Griffall qualify

ST. MORITZ, Switz. — American lugers Chris Mazdzer in singles, and the doubles team of Matt Mortensen and Preston Griffall qualified Friday via the Nations Cup for the weekend World Cup series in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

With six United States athletes in this tony resort, these were the only competitors entered in the Nations Cup event. Erin Hamlin in women's singles, and doubles sliders Christian Niccum and Jayson Terdiman, were exempted into the World Cup due to their "A" seed status.

Mazdzer, a 2010 Olympian from Saranac Lake, posted the second best time of the single-heat Nations Cup race. Mazdzer's run, which began above the bobsled start near Badrutt's Park and concluded in the nearby village of Celerina, was timed in one minute, 07.373 seconds. He finished between two Russians. Stepan Fedorov won the event in 1:07.222. Third place went to Evgeniy Voskresenskiy in 1:07.414.

Matt Mortensen, of Huntington Station, N.Y. and 2006 Olympian Griffall, of Salt Lake City, Utah, starting from the lower Monti's Bolt near Sunny corner, clocked 53.814 to finish fourth. This new start position is named after Italian bobsled great Eugenio Monti.

Okemo Mountain Resort offering Super Bowl deals

LUDLOW, Vt. — In honor of the New England Patriots and New York Giants making it to the Super Bowl, Okemo Moutain Resort is offering a special two-day-lift-ticket deal valid for Feb. 3 and 4, for just $99. Print-at-home tickets must be purchased online at least 48 hours in advance.

For sports fans who want to make it home in time for pre-game revelry, The Big Game Sunday Solution ticket takes an additional $10 off Okemo's already-reduced Sunday Solution rate. That means skiers and riders can enjoy the slopes from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. for only $64 for adults, $54 for young adults and seniors, and $40 for juniors. Skiers and riders can visit any ticket window to take advantage of this deal.

For Monday-morning quarterbacks who prefer to re-live every play of the game from the comfort of a chairlift, Okemo has an extra special lift ticket value that depends entirely on the final score of Sunday's game. On Feb. 6, the price of a full-day lift ticket will be charged at $1 per point, based on the total combined points scored during the Super Bowl. If the final score of the game is Patriots 24 and Giants 21, the price of a lift ticket on Monday will be $45. How low could it go? A scoreless game would mean free lift tickets; however, the lowest combined score in Super Bowl history was 21 points in 1973. In case of a high-score game, Okemo is capping the Feb. 6 lift ticket price at $59.
