PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State men's hockey coach Bob Emery was hoping to see his team regain its scoring touch Tuesday night.
The Cardinals did just that in a 9-3 victory over Skidmore College in non-conference action at the Stafford Ice Arena.
"Our goal was to get the puck down low," Emery said. "The (Kyle) Kudroch, (Jared) Docking, (Kyle) Taylor line got our cycling going early on and paved the way."
Kudroch scored two first-period goals for the Cardinals (10-2-3), the second breaking a 1-all tie at the 18:41 mark.
"That was a huge goal for us to go up, 2-1," Emery said. "I was happy with the way we came out to play."
It stayed 2-1 until Plattsburgh State broke loose for three goals in the latter stages of the second period when Kyle VanderMale scored at 12:53, Dan Sliasis at 17:06 and Chris Wieland at 18:08.
"Skidmore played hard," Emery said. "But, their goalie let in a weak goal that made it 4-1 and they weren't the same team after that."
The Cardinals continued to pull away in the third period as goals by Taylor, Matty MacLeod, Ryan Corry and Andrew Willock gave the hosts a 9-1 advantage.
Plattsburgh State starting netminder Ryan Williams stopped 11 of 12 shots over the first 46:24 of the contest, allowing Matt Czerkowicz's goal in the opening period.
Back-up goaltender Raphy Rossi played the final 13:36 and allowed goals to Brendan Cottam and Sasha Thomas.
"The only negative is that we had a couple of players leave Rossy out to dry on those two goals," Emery said.
John Bienkowski had a tough night of it in net for the Thoroughbreds (5-8), making 39 saves on 48 shots.
Corry's goal early in the third was on the powerplay as Plattsburgh State went one-for-five while skating up a man.
"We need to go back to basics on our powerplay," Emery said.
The Cardinals are off this weekend before playing at Williams College on Monday in another non-conference game.
"We had some guys get some confidence by scoring some goals tonight," Emery said.
"But, we're in the tough part of our schedule and we'll need to work hard and make sacrifices."
