PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State baseball coach Kris Doorey hopes the Cardinals' second trip down south will be as good as the first.

The Cardinals compiled a 4-1 record to open their 2010 season last week in Myrtle Beach, S.C. and will play nine games this week in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. Included are four doubleheaders.

"We played pretty well in Myrtle Beach and we're hoping for similar results in Florida," Doorey said. "A trip like this can set the tone for the season. If you go 5-4 or 4-5, you're an average team. But, if you go, 9-0 of 8-1, people will start to look at us.

"Our goal is to win every single game."

In addition, Plattsburgh State, which opens its trip today against Scranton at 6 p.m., has an exhibition contest on tap for Thursday against the Minnesota Twins rookie team.

"We had some connections here and there and we were able to get to the Twins first to set up the game," Doorey said.

"Corey Johnston's dad is the clubhouse guy in Rochester for the Twins' Triple A team. And, I have a connection with Joe Nathan that helped out."

Nathan, the star relief pitcher for the Twins, was Doorey's college roommate at Stony Brook.

Pitching and defense led the way for Plattsburgh State's success in Myrtle Beach.

"I was still pretty excited about our pitching on the way back home," Doorey said. "Our pitching is different from last year — we have fewer question marks at this time.

"We know for sure Matt O'Leary and Dan Tracy, who both pitched well in Myrtle Beach, will get two starts each for us in Florida. And, some of our newer arms did pretty well and will get another look."

Doorey would like to see a little more consistency out of the offense from top to bottom.

"We hit .272 as a team in Myrtle Beach," he said. "The temperature was 35 degrees and it wasn't any different from the weather we've had up here.

"We had six guys hit .300 or better and two guys who hit under .100. Those two, however, will hit. Donny Coolidge had nine hits in all, five for extra bases, while Anthony Presto and Danny Roeser did a good job setting the table at the top of the order."
