Jr. Cardinal pee wees win tourney opener
ROME — The Plattsburgh Jr. Cardinal Pee Wees won their first game in the State Tournament Friday, beating the Clinton Comets of Utica 3-0.
Bailey Conklin scored a beautiful short-handed, unassisted goal to open the scoring. Ryan Whalen then scored on a nice wrist shot with an assist going to J.D. Side. Kyle Constanty's nice tip-in goal, set up by Michael Stetz, capped the scoring.
Jonathan Plessis-Belair stood strong between the pipes, facing 29 shots for his ninth shutout of the season. Andrew Bechard and T.J. Oricchio were impressive defensively for the Cards.
The Jr. Cardinals will face the Westchester Vipers Saturday morning and then play the Clarence Mustangs Saturday evening to try to advance to Sunday's semifinals.

Partnership makes for safer racing at Whiteface
BURLINGTON, Vt. — Athletes competing in the Super G and Giant Slalom at Whiteface in Wilmington will race on a much improved trail thanks, in part, to a grant from the Kelly Brush Foundation.
The foundation awarded $10,000 to the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) for trail modifications to the race course where 50 ski races are hosted each season. At the U.S. Alpine Championships March 20-23, the Super G and Giant Slalom races are set to be held on the improved trail. The $60,000 safety and improvement project is a joint undertaking of ORDA and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association.
Trail modifications included widening, rerouting snowmaking pipeline and regrading sections of the Parkway and Thruway trails, which comprise the upper segment of the Super G course. The entire course includes the Parkway/Thruway/Drapers trails and is also the trail for Giant Slalom racing. Widening the trail creates critical additional space for safety protection along the side of the course and allows for setting both a men's and women's Super G course on the same day and gives athletes more room in the event of a high speed fall.
Kelly Brush, together with her family, started the foundation in 2006 after she sustained a severe spinal cord injury while racing in NCAA Div. I competition as a member of the Middlebury College Ski Team in Vermont.
Spots available for USA Luge Fantasy Camp
LAKE PLACID — The USA Luge Fantasy Camp will take place April 8-11 in Lake Placid.
The three-day experience allows "campers" to live the life of an Olympic luge athlete, as they try the sport firsthand, approaching speeds of 50 miles-per-hour, down the 1,360-meter long Olympic Sports Complex course, in Lake Placid. USA Luge provides all the equipment needed, including helmets, sleds, padding and race clothing, for the weekend of luge fun.
While in Lake Placid, each participant, age 18 and above, will also be taught proper start technique on the indoor, refrigerated start ramps at USA Luge's headquarters, one of only two indoor refrigerated start ramps in North America, and stay at the United States Olympic Training Center, the primary training site for many of the top U.S. Olympians.
The camp is directed by three-time Olympian and 1998 silver medalist Gordy Sheer. Sheer, in conjunction with other members of the USA Luge coaching staff. Each session will be captured on videotape and reviewed to further sharpen the skills of the participant. A farewell dinner concludes the three-day event and each camper receives a video documenting their time in Lake Placid.
