POTSDAM — The Brushton-Moira boys' basketball team stayed with Maple Hill in a high-scoring first half, trailing by a 38-35 margin at the break, Friday night.

The second half was a different story, however, as the Panthers' shots stopped finding the bottom of the net and the fourth-ranked Wildcats broke it open in a 79-58 victory in the NYSPHSAA Class C regional semifinals at Potsdam State.

Section II-champion Maple Hill (22-1 overall) will play Section VII champion Ticonderoga today at 4 p.m. at Potsdam High School, with a berth in the Final Four on the line.

Brushton-Moira came out flying and took a 9-1 lead early in the first quarter. But, Maple Hill rallied into a 19-all tie after one.

The Panthers went back on top and led by five — 31-26 — before the Wildcats scored 12 points in a row before settling for a 38-35 halftime advantage.

Maple Hill expanded its lead to 50-38 in the third. Brushton-Moira, however, scored six points in succession, with Josh Sevey capping the run with a three-pointer, to pull to within six, at 50-44.

But, that would be as close as the Panthers would get as Maple Hill tallied the final five points of the quarter — all by Christopher Despart — and then outscored the Section X champions, 24-14, in the fourth.

Despart poured in 27 points for the Wildcats, while Sean Danaher and David Briggs added 14 each and Jake Jasiewicz chipped in with 13.

Sevey canned a trio of three-pointers for the Panthers and finished with 20 points. John Green followed with 11.
