Patterson comes through for Chiefs

SARANAC — Micah Patterson felt the pressure in the 3,200- and 1,600-meter relays Thursday at the Section VII Track and Field Qualifier.

But he came through for Saranac in both of them.

The Chiefs won the distance relay in 8 minutes, 28.9 seconds and the mile relay in 3:30.4, and Patterson also claimed the 400 meters.

Thursday's winners, along with athletes who reached a qualifying mark, will head to Caledonia-Mumford High School for the June 10-11 NYSPHSAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Patterson, who ran the final leg of the 3,200 relay, took the baton with the lead and then had to hold off Plattsburgh High's Tre Bucci, who closed in down the stretch but couldn't quite pass Patterson.

"That was just ridiculous," Patterson said. "Bucci's a really strong runner. That's pretty much my rival here. It was a good race."

In the 1,600, the Chiefs held a narrow lead over Ticonderoga when Patterson started the third leg, and he gave them a bigger cushion.

"We were in the lead, so it was great, but we weren't that far," he said. "So I kicked it into gear and I tried my hardest."

Jake Martindale helped win that relay and also claimed the 400 hurdles in 1:04. Saranac's Corey Duval (shot put) and Jonathan Brown (pentathlon) also earned spots in the state meet.

Ticonderoga's Jesse Perkins was a double qualifier. He took first in the 100 dash in 11.3 seconds and helped the Sentinels win the 400 relay. Teammate Jonathyn Granger ran in the relay and won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 10 inches. Jay Hebert claimed the 110 hurdles by crossing the line in 15 seconds.

Devon Anderson will represent Beekmantown at the state meet in the discus; he threw 142-10 Thursday.

Peru's Dan Lennon didn't have anyone on his heels in the 3,200, but he was determined to turn in a strong final lap anyway because he slipped to second during the last lap at the 2010 meet.

He won by nearly 30 seconds Thursday, in 9:37.6, and he said running alone out in front like that gives him a chance to work on his technique.

Lennon also placed first in the 1,600.

He went to the state meet last year, and he said he's improved considerably since then — he set the Section VII record in the 3,200 this season even though he was sick.

"I like to say I broke the section record with strep throat. That feels kind of good," Lennon said.

Next week, he'll be trying to lower the record again and maybe even win a state title.

"That's what I'm hoping," Lennon said. "The major plan is to try to beat Chad Noelle from Greene.

"In indoor I focused on the mile to work on my speed. I think I have the endurance, but Chad Noelle has a lot of speed, so that's what I'm trying to get him on is the speed."

Peru will take two other athletes to Caledonia-Mumford: Shawn Hendrix won the triple jump (44-1 1/2), and Bryce Schnaars claimed the high jump (5-10).

Zach Ziemer of Seton Catholic placed first in the 800 in 2:06.7, and Mitchell Ryan will go to the state meet for the 3,000 steeplechase after registering the section's top time during the season.

Saranac Lake's C.J. Stewart earned a spot in the 200 by winning in 23.4.
