MALONE — AuSable Valley's John Hickey was the only golfer to break 80 as he carded a 79 Monday to win low medalist honors in the Annual Craig Chisum Memorial Intersectional Golf Tournament held at the Malone Golf Club.
Over 20 area schools from Section VII and X were represented and a total of 84 players hit the links in a shotgun format at 3 p.m. The weather was sunny, but extremely windy.
Potsdam's Mike Chambers and Saranac Lake's Michael Phalen each recorded an 84, while Franklin Academy's Seth Barney shot an 87.
In the team event, it was decided by only one stroke, with Section VII retaining the title with an average score of 93.29 versus Section X's 94.30.
The coaches from Section VII retained the "Coaches Cup" with a stroke average of 87.13 compared to 88.25 for the Section X coaches. AuSable Valley's Chris Dubay led the way with an 81, followed by Brushton-Moira's Randy Todd with an 82. Northeastern Clinton's Matt Fredette was third with an 84.
The Chisum Memorial is the premier junior golf tournament in the North Country. It is strategically scheduled between the high school sectionals and the state championship being played this weekend at Cornell University.
Students, coaches and athletic directors all compete in the event in different flights.
The tournament is in memory of Craig Chisum, who was an avid golfer from Malone who was tragically killed by a drunk driver while attending Methodist College in North Carolina in the late 1980's. His father, Mel, was the PGA Golf Professional at Bluff Point in Plattsburgh for many years.
A scholarship is given each year at Franklin Academy in Malone for a student who is pursuing a business degree in college and has a strong interest in golf.
