Surging Hornets win fourth straight

PHS girls down NCCS for fourth straight CVAC win

PLATTSBURGH — Marle Curle scored 22 points and Plattsburgh High tightened up its defense in the second half to beat Northeastern Clinton, 47-31, in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference girls' basketball Tuesday.

The surging Hornets have won four straight games.

Plattsburgh High (5-7, 5-5), which led by four at halftime, held Northeastern Clinton to two points in the third quarter. The Hornets had a 15-point cushion heading into the fourth.

"We had a great defensive second half. Just excellent team defense," Plattsburgh coach Joe Staves said. "We shut down (Paige) Southwick and (Skyler) Hebert in the second half — they had one point between them."

Olivia Carlsson had nine points for Plattsburgh, and Justine Rotz tossed in eight.

"We got excellent play off the bench from Kelly Menard, Ashley Marlow and Cieara Duquette, especially defensively," Staves said. "And Justine Rotz gave us a good, solid game."

Southwick led the Cougars (7-5, 7-3) with 12 points, and Hebert finished with nine.

Saranac 44 Beekmantown 10

SARANAC — Stephanie Linder tossed in 13 points and the Chiefs (13-0, 10-0) shut down the Eagles' offense.

"It was a great defensive effort. We had 32 steals in the game, and that led to a lot of transition points," Saranac coach Tim Newell said. "We did a good job not allowing their forwards, Shannon Ryan and Emily Anderson, to get to the post. We kept them out farther than they'd like. And our guards did a great job pressuring the perimeter."

The Chiefs held Ryan, the conference's leading scorer, to seven points and Anderson to one.

Alisha Ducatte scored 11 for Saranac, which committed just 14 turnovers.
