Cadets' defense holds up

NORTHFIELD, Vt — The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team couldn't break through Norwich's defense Wednesday afternoon and had to settle for a scoreless overtime draw in non-league play.

The Cardinals dominated possession and territorial play with a 19-9 shot advantage and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.

"Norwich was definitely playing not to lose," said Plattsburgh State head coach Chris Waterbury. "They viewed today's game a little different than the ones they have already played this season.

"We took it to them pretty good last year. But they had a good gameplan this year coming in and stuck to it. We couldn't break them down."

The Cardinals, despite the edge in play, couldn't get any golden scoring chances.

"It's a small field we played on and a bumpy one," Waterbury said. "We lost possession a lot and struggled — it wasn't conducive to our style of play.

"Their goalie's (Alex Toomey) best saves were coming out and stopping crosses. He did a good job of that, and we weren't able to get a clean look at goal.

"To their credit, they defended hard. They didn't do a lot offensively but had a couple of transition chances. And that's what they were playing for."

Andy Heighington finished with three saves for the Cardinals (2-0-1), and the freshman Toomey had nine stops for the Cadets (2-1-1).

"It's a blemish on our record," Waterbury said. "It's frustrating because we played well enough to win. We just couldn't crack their defense.

"They were very aggressive and we had an extraordinary amount of free kicks. We were dangerous on set pieces — we had a couple of headers go wide and their keeper made a good save on one.

"It almost feels like a loss for us. But we still played well defensively and were able to get our third shutout in three games."

The Cardinals return to play this weekend at the Manhattanville Tournament.
