Warriors cruise past Lions

Chazy, Keene, Johnsburg also win in MVAC soccer

ELIZABETHTOWN — Willsboro made an early statement during opening-day action in Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference boys' soccer Wednesday afternoon.

Alex Hamel scored two goals and added two assists as the Warriors broke loose in the second half for a surprisingly easy 7-2 victory over Elizabethtown-Lewis.

"We expected to have a tough game," said Willsboro coach Andrew Lee. "They played well in the Northeastern Clinton Tournament and were coming in on a high note.

"We beat them in the sectionals last year, and we felt they would be ready for us."

Hamel and Patrick Wells gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead at the half, with Clay Sherman assisting on both goals.

The goals then came fast and furious in the second half.

"There were four goals scored — two by each team — in a very short amount of time," Lee said.

Brandon Bertrand, Wells, John Pollock, Sherman and Hamel all tallied after intermission for the Warriors.

Tyler White and Conner Apthorp scored goals for Elizabethtown-Lewis. Cody Sayward made four saves in net for Willsboro.
