Cardinals need momentum

PLATTSBURGH — With postseason play just around the corner, the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team will be looking to build some momentum this weekend.

The Cardinals host Buffalo State tonight at 7 p.m. and Fredonia on Saturday in State University of New York Athletic Conference action at the Stafford Ice Arena.

The Cardinals (14-4-4, 10-2-1) skated to a 4-1 home victory over Morrisville on Saturday and can clinch second place in the SUNYAC regular season standings with a win tonight.

"Buffalo State has everything to gain and nothing to lose," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "They will throw everything they've got at us and work their tails off.

"We have to stay disciplined and stay out of the box. We have to play Cardinal Hockey and get the puck to the net where good things will hopefully happen for us."

It has been a tough season for Buffalo State (6-15-1, 2-11), which has lost five games in a row. This past weekend, the Bengals dropped two one-goal contests at home — 3-2 to Brockport and 2-1 to Geneseo.

Buffalo State has nine players with 10 points or more on the season, led by junior forward Nick Petriello (14-11-25). Sophomore Alan Fritch has done the majority of the goaltending, with a 5-12-1 record and 4.13 goals-against-average.

Fredonia, on the other hand, is having a good season with a 15-5-2 overall record and a third-place mark of 7-4-2 in the SUNYAC. The Blue Devils a 4-1-2 in thelr last seven games, with the lone loss being a 3-1 decision at Oswego.

This past weekend at home, Fredonia skated to a couple of 3-all overtime ties with Geneseo and Brockport.

Fredonia has put up some impressive offensive stats with seven players with 24 or more points on the season, led by junior forward Alex Morton (14-17-31), sophomore forward Bryan Ross (15-14-29) and junior defenseman Steve Rizer (7-22-29).

The goaltending duties have been shared by senior Pat Street (8-1-1, 3.07 gaa) and sophomore Kody Van Rentergem (6-4-1, 2.44 gaa).

The Cardinals had their most productive weekend on the road this season back on Nov. 20-21 when Plattsburgh State skated to a 7-0 win at Buffalo State and then a 10-2 victory over Fredonia the following night.

Since that loss to the Cardinals, however, the Blue Devils are 9-2-2 in their last 13 games.

The Cardinals close out their SUNYAC and regular season schedule next Friday at Potsdam.
