LAKE PLACID — Shaker-Colonie scored a disputed overtime goal to cap a late 3-2 comeback victory over Saranac Lake in the Lake Placid Winter Carnival championship game Saturday.
Doug Swezey netted the game-winner 3:18 into the extra stanza.
"I felt the net was knocked off its moorings — the refs had a different thought so that's basically how they got their game winning goal," Saranac Lake coach Will Ellsworth said.
The Red Storm (13-4) blew a 2-0 lead built up after the second quarter.
Corey Brustle scored 1:30 into the third period before teammate Ryan Phillips tied the game up less than eight minutes later.
Ellsworth had a problem with Shaker-Colonie's second goal as well.
He said his goalie made a save, the referees' "whistle blew and refs realized the puck had somehow, after the whistle, trickled into the net. In my opinion two questionable calls."
Saranac Lake was playing its fourth game in six days and Ellsworth said fatigue played a factor in the loss.
"Shaker-Colonie had a deep bench and I think they had the legs in the third period," he said. "Playing a team of this caliber ... will definitely help us in our playoff hunt."
Devin Darrah put Saranac Lake on the board in the first period off assists from Drew Tedford and Logan McDougall. The Red Storm went up 2-0 on a second period unassisted goal by Logan McDougall.
Shaker-Colonie outshot Saranac Lake 31-19.
Tyler O'Neil racked up 28 saves for the Red Storm while Jim Lanne stopped 17 for Shaker-Colonie.

MIDDLETOWN — Beekmantown bounced back from a 6-3 loss Friday night against Burke Catholic to defeat Monroe-Woodbury, 2-1, Saturday afternoon.
Brett Palmer netted the game-winner with 32 seconds remaining in the third period after a scoreless second.
Palmer also tallied an assist on a Kyle Mathieu goal in the first period after Monroe-Woodbury's Shawn Livgreen gave his team a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the first.
"We just really faced a lot of adversity — it was a tough game," Beekmantown coach Justin Frechette said, adding that the team got to the hotel room at 1 a.m. after a late Friday game. "Our kids showed heart and mental toughness."
The Eagles outshot Burke by a 26-14 margin Friday but were unable to capitalize on many scoring chances.
Burke's Josh Turner found the back of the net on the penalty kill to put Beekmantown in a two-goal deficit late in the first period. Brendan Carnright scored a power-play goal just before the intermission, but Burke responded by outscoring the Eagles, 3-1, in the second.
"We got off to a very slow start," Frechette said. "We made the mental error of giving up a shorthanded goal against a very good team on the road."
Ben Trombley and Mathieu also scored for Beekmantown in the loss.
"It was a long weekend," Frechette said. "It was nice to pull out a win on the road. We got better this weekend."
