PLATTSBURGH — The real Plattsburgh State men's hockey team showed up in the third period Saturday night.
Phil Farrow and Dylan Clarke scored goals less than a minute apart in the final stanza as the Cardinals broke a 1-all tie and skated to a 4-1 victory over pesky Morrisville in State University of New York Athletic Conference action at the Stafford Ice Arena.
The Mustangs (6-14, 3-9), who posted a 5-4 win at Potsdam the night before, stayed with the Cardinals (14-4-4, 10-2-1) for the first two periods, must to the dismay of Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery.
"I give Morrisville a lot of credit," Emery said. "They came out with a lot of energy.
"We had about 10 minutes of energy and leadership in the first period and none in the second period. We finally got the energy and leadership we needed in the third."
Farrow gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead at the 6:13 mark with an unassisted goal.
Farrow induced a turnover in the Morrisville end and sent a shot on goal that Mustangs' goalie Caylin Relkoff couldn't control.
Shortly after, at 7:20, Dan Sliasis sent a pass from the side to the far side of the net to Dylan Clarke, who tapped the puck into the net for a power-play marker.
"Farrow has been practicing and playing better," Emery said. "It was good to see him score. Also, Clarke. We need those two guys to play well."
Farrow then added his second goal of the game with 23 seconds left in the period.
"We need to get leadership for 60 minutes," Emery said. "We don't have a lot of rah-rah guys. But, talent loses out to hard work."
The first period was scoreless until the lone penalty of the opening stanza opened the door for a Cardinal power-play goal at 19:02. Defenseman Ryan Corry scored from straight on with a screen set up in front of Relkoff.
But, the Mustangs evened the score at 3:00 of the second when Alex Tillaart tallied his first goal of the season after Adam Hercules won a faceoff in the Cardinals' end.
"We weren't able to get any momentum going in the second period because we spent time in the penalty box," Emery said.
Morrisville held a 35-34 shot advantage and Josh Leis played a strong game in net for the Cardinals, stopping 34 of 35 shots. He made 16 saves in the second stanza when Plattsburgh State was outshot, 17-5.
"Leis was equal to the task, especially in the second period when he made some big saves," Emery said.
The Cardinals close out their home regular season schedule this coming weekend when they host Buffalo State on Friday and Fredonia on Saturday.
In other SUNYAC action Saturday night, Brockport and Fredonia played to a 3-all overtime tie and Geneseo edged out a 2-1 victory over Buffalo State.
