You can look back over the last 70 years at some of the area athletes and personalities who made headlines in area sports. Flashback will revive memories of great local athletes and outstanding team successes.

PLATTSBURGH — Larry Harney turned in another outstanding performance Saturday to lead Plattsburgh High School to the Section 7-10 Boys' Swimming Championship at Plattsburgh State.

Harney won the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly in back-to-back events midway through the meet and also figured in two winning relay efforts — the 200 medley and 200 freestyle.

Plattsburgh High, with its great depth, tallied 371 points to easily out-distance AuSable Valley, with 263. Gouverneur was next with 173, just ahead of Franklin Academy of Malone, 170. Beekmantown, 32, and Peru, 5 rounded out the field.

PHS also showed its strength in numbers in the butterfly where Harney led a Hornets' sweep of the first four places.

Beekmantown's Dan McGovern also had an excellent meet, winning the 200 individual medley by 14 seconds and the 100 backstroke by more than four seconds. McGovern beat his seed time in the backstroke by almost the same margin.

AuSable Valley's Ben Ford doubled in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Ford was never threatened in either event, winning by 14 and 43 seconds.

Malone's Ian Rydgren and Sam Moore scored the two biggest upsets of the meet. Rydgren beat top-seed Brian Goodell of PHS in the backstroke while Moore upset favored Michael Dusharm to win the 100 freestyle.

Rydgren and Moore then teamed with Alex Nichols and Eric Boyer to close out the meet with an upset of AuSable Valley in the 400 freestyle relay.

Meet winners are eligible for the New York State Championships to be held Feb. 26-27 at Erie County Community College.

Also qualifying for Plattsburgh High in the relays were Hamzah Qudsi, Goodell, Ryan Bracy, Nick Prenoveau, Adam Emery and Nate Leopard.
