Saranac, Seton sweep in state qualifier

ELIZABETHTOWN — The Saranac and Seton Catholic boys' and girls' cross country teams earned sweeps Friday in the Section VII State Qualifier Cross-Country Meet at Cobble Hill Golf Course.

The seven members of the winning school team will attend next week's NYSPHSAA Meet at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School in Verona. They will be joined by the first five finishers not on the winning school team.

Seton Catholic repeated as the top teams in Class D for boys and girls.

Margaret Champagne took first for the Knights in the girls' race in 18:23 after finishing second last season. Teammate Phoebe Christopher came in sixth to aid Seton Catholic.

Mitchell Ryan and Barrett Waling finished third and fourth for the Seton Catholic boys' team, which edged Ticonderoga, 25-31. Ryan crossed in 16:05, and Waling was right behind him, finishing two seconds later.

The Chiefs' teams each captured Class C titles after both finished second in Class B last year.

Josh Wade led the Saranac boys' team with a fifth-place finish in 16:18. Zach LePage was the next Chief to cross the finish line, taking 12th.

The Saranac girls' team got a close victory over Northeastern Clinton in a 44-46 decision.

Morgan Kelly was the top Saranac girl to finish, taking 14th in 20:18. Teammates Tracy Rush and Natalie Casey-Sanger grabbed 19th and 20th, respectively.

Beekmantown captured the Class B boys' race in a narrow, 26-29, victory over Peru, the defending winner.

The Eagles had three in the top 10. Colin Quackenbush led the way in sixth (16:19), followed by Jordan West three seconds later. Matt Simpson added a ninth-place finish.

The Peru girls' team defended its Class B title in dominant fashion.

Ashley Leta led the Indians by finishing third in 18:44. Meghan Mazzella was not far behind to take fourth. Cheyanne Dobozy and Maria Remillard finished back-to-back in seventh and eighth.

Peru's Dan Lennon won the boys' race for the second year in a row. In his last local race, he finished in a blistering 14:31 after crossing in 15:05 last year. Lennon finished more than a minute ahead of the pack.

Plattsburgh High's Jeriqho Gadway finished second (15:48) in the boys' race. Emma Deshaies ran strong for the Hornets' girls' team, taking second in 18:27.
