Don’t assail or impugn an identifiable individual or group. If you have that kind of criticism, sign your name and submit it as a Letter to the Editor. (There is some leeway on this in connection with public officials, but it is not unconditional.)

Don’t use profanity. This includes the term “tea bagger.”

Don’t be incendiary or tasteless. Those qualities are subjective, of course, and our editors will be the arbiters.

Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

Remember, moderators are not allowed to edit any article comments. If an article comment fails any of the above criteria, the entire comment will be deleted.

Patriots break through against Peru

PERU — Sierra Cotrona and Alexis Provost led the way Tuesday as AuSable Valley beat Peru for the first time in the history of Champlain Valley Athletic Conference swimming.

The Patriots won six races on their way to a 97-73 victory.

The Indians started a swimming program in 1979, immediately becoming a powerhouse, and had never lost a meet to AuSable Valley until Tuesday.

"I know the girls are very excited about it," AuSable Valley coach Andy Johnson said. "They swam great together and they had a lot of fun doing it, and that's what I want to see."

Cotrona won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 27.2 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 1:08.7.

She and Provost were both part of the winning 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams, and Provost also touched first in the 50 free (28.8) and the 100 free (1:03.3).

Alexis Facteau and Sidney Murphy were also on both relay teams.

Rebecca Brown paced Peru with first-place finishes in the 100 butterfly (1:17.1) and 500 free (6:28.0), and she helped the Indians win the 400 free relay. Paige Vaccaro was part of that squad and also won the 200 free in 2:22.0.

"AuSable Valley did an excellent job executing their races and getting the spots they needed to score points," Peru coach Peter Wheatley said. "Unfortunately, we were missing one of the key girls in our lineup who was out with an injury, Ellie Silverman, which changed our lineup a lot. But it's definitely no excuse.

"We had a lot of very close races that could have gone either way, but in the end, the stronger team won (Tuesday)."
