NCCS, Peru advance to Cougar Classic final

CHAMPLAIN — Host Northeastern Clinton and Peru recorded 4-0 semifinal wins over their respective boys’ soccer opponents in the opening round of the Pizza Hut Cougar Classic Thursday night.

The Cougars blanked Lake Placid after taking 22 shots on goal, and Peru needed a strong second stanza to record a shutout victory over AuSable Valley.

The Cougars are slated to take on Peru tonight at 7 p.m. in the championship game. AuSable Valley and Lake Placid will play in the consolation at 5 p.m.

NCCS 4, Lake Placid 0

Kyle McCarthy tallied a pair of goals to help move Northeastern Clinton into the championship. Austin Tetreault assisted on each of McCarthy’s goals at 14:18 and 35:42 of the first half, respectively.

Colby Provost added another marker at 25:25 of the second stanza with the assist credited to McKenna Hunter. Ryan Marks closed out the Cougars’ scoring at 39:30 with Dustin Poupore executing the assist.

Peru 4, AuSable Valley 0

Ian Spear registered two goals in the second half following a scoreless first half to help Peru reach the finals.

Justin Wiley added an assist on two of Peru’s four goals in second half. Michael Danis was credited with the shutout in net. Peter Daly and Ryan McCall also tallied goals.

Nathan Casey played a strong game at midfield for the Patriots. Austin Facteau was also exceptional on the defensive side of the ball.

Beekmantown 9, Plattsburgh 1

CHAZY — Adam Goldfarb scored three goals and assisted on another as the Eagles erupted for a one-sided victory over the Hornets in the opening round of the Frankie Garrow Memorial Tournament, hosted by Chazy.

Beekmantown will take on the winner of today’s 11 a.m. contest between the host Eagles and Canton in the championship game.

Austin Burl added two goals for Beekmantown, while Pawandeep Singh, Zach Brockway, who also added three assists, Brenden Carnright and Austin Proper chipped in with a goal apiece.

The Eagles held a 2-0 lead at the half and then tallied seven goals after intermission.

Brooks Kelley scored the lone goal for the Hornets.

Elizabethtown-Lewis Tourney

ELIZABETHTOWN — Host Elizabethtown-Lewis and Willsboro opened their seasons with wins in the opening round of the North Country Tournament.

The Lions rolled to an 8-0 victory over Indian Lake/Long Lake, while the Warriors were 2-0 winners over Keene.

The tournament is based on points, and today’s schedule has Keene versus Elizabethtown-Lewis at 2 p.m., followed by Indian Lake/Long Lake against Willsboro at 4 p.m.

Will Tomkins, Brody Hooper and Cortland White scored two goals each as the Lions rolled to their win.

Geeg Dedam and Isaiah Turner also scored for Elizabethtown-Lewis, which held a 3-0 lead at the half.

Charlie Huttig assisted on four goals, while Hunter Farrell, Turner, Joel Morris and Tomkins chipped in with a helper apiece.

Justin LaPier made two saves in net for the shutout.

Willsboro 2, Keene 0

Nick Arnold tallied both goals for the young Willsboro team.

Arnold opened the scoring at 12:29 of the first half and closed out the scoring with 1:06 left in the opening half.

Dakoda Latford made four saves in net for the shutout as the Warriors held a 21-10 edge in shots.

Forward Seth Swires, along with defenders Tyler Bridge and Jake Hubbard, were strong in the Willsboro win.

AuSable Valley Tournament

CLINTONVILLE — Kylee Cassavaugh’s second goal of the game, with 10 minutes remaining in regulation, lifted Elizabethtown-Lewis to a 3-2 victory over the hosts in the championship game of the AuSable Valley Tournament.

Katie Decker also scored for the Lions, while Kearstin Ashline was in net for the win.

Bryce Douglas and Rachel Knapp tallied goals for the Patriots. Nichole Pulsifer was in the AuSable Valley nets.

In the consolation, Alyson Arnold’s goal gave Willsboro a 1-0 win over Keene.

Renee Marcotte posted the shutout in net, while Tucker Gieger was the Keene goalie.

In Wednesday’s opening round, AuSable Valley was a 3-0 winner over Willsboro and Elizabethtown-Lewis posted a 5-0 victory over Keene.
