Swamp will have big say in Cougars' success

PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton Community College women's softball team is counting heavily on newcomer Danine Swamp this season.

Swamp will have a big say on how the Cougars fare both defensively and offensively, being the No. 1 pitcher on the team and also the clean-up hitter.

"Danine is a very good and consistent ptcher," said head coach Donna Dixon. "She has great control, good speed, a change-up, screwball and dropball.

"She also has a quick bat and good stick. She will be our fourth hitter."

Kelley Lucia will back up Swamp on the mound.

"Kelley isn't as fast, but is consistent and throws strikes," said Dixon.

The Cougars, who had their season-opening doubleheader at SUNY Delhi postponed Saturday, will instead open their 2010 season today at a very tough Herkimer Community College team.

Clinton C.C. has a young team this season, with only Magan Bechard returning from a year ago.

Bechard, however, has been out for a while with a broken finger, and will miss the Herkimer twinbill. She is expected to be available next weekend.

Codia Holland will be the Cougars' catcher. Holland, however, will not play this weekend because of a death in the family and Cassie Pfeiffer will catch.

Bechard, Brooke Pray, Lucia, Pfeiffer and Jessica Manor are all working out in the infield, while Kim Dragoon, Erin Terry, Colleen Costin, Nicole Foote and Jellisa Curry are vying for playing time in the outfield.

"We have some versatility," Dixon said. "We're young and we're going to have some players out of position this weekend because of the two were missing.

"Plus, we haven't been outside yet. But, I'm excited and looking forward to seeing what we can do. We have some players who can swing the bat."

Dixon, an outstanding softball player in her own right, coaches soccer and basketball at Clinton C.C. and hasn't coached softball for seven years.

"I've been around college athletics enough to know that playing good defense and putting the ball in play are key. And, that's what we're hoping to do."

The Cougars will play 11 doubleheaders in all, including four twinbills at home.
