WEST PLATTSBURGH — It was a “Dog’s” day in the Adirondack Slo-Pitch Softball League A Division playoffs.
Legion Post 1619, guided by longtime manager Richard “Mad Dog” Castine, rallied for a 23-16 victory over Kneucraft Fine Jewelry & Design in Game 6 last week and recorded a 4-2 best-of-seven series win to capture the A Division championship.
“It was a tough league schedule during the season, and the Legion playoff run was grueling to say the least,” Castine said. “The team was extremely hard nosed down the stretch.
“Congratulations to the entire league for a great season.”
In the final contest, Kneucraft built up a 14-2 lead before home runs by Scott Baker and Justin Sample helped cut the deficit to 14-11. In the bottom of the fifth, the Legion scored five times to take a 16-14 advantage, including home runs by Baker, John Southwick and Sample.
David Waldron’s grand slam then highlighted a six-run bottom of the sixth that put the game away.
Fourth-seeded Post 1619 defeated nine-time defending A Division champion Labatt Blue, 3-1, in the quarterfinals and top-seeded Plattsburgh Wholesale/Big Earl’s/Buck’s, 4-1, in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, third-seeded Kneucraft posted a 3-1 victory over Recore Enterprises/Post 1618 in the quarterfinals and then a 4-1 decision over second-seeded T. Maliniak Masonry in the semifinals.
Post 1619 ended the season with a 31-13 overall record, while Kneucraft was 29-15.
