Stars too much for Montreal

PLATTSBURGH — Even though they weren't at the top of their game Saturday night, the Plattsburgh North Stars were still way too much for the Montreal Voyageurs.

Ken Stay threw two touchdown passes to Jordon Keleher and the North Stars' defense pitched a shutout in a 24-0 victory in the Empire Football League quarterfinal playoffs.

The third-seeded and defending champion North Stars (9-2) will play at the second-seeded Albany Metro Mallers this coming Saturday.

"With all the byes and forfeits we've had, it's been hard to stay sharp," North Stars head coach Pat Keleher said. "We've only played two games since August 27. At least we've played twice in the last three weeks.

"We were a little sloppy tonight. We had some penalties that stopped momentum for us. But, even with all of that, I felt we controlled the game."

The North Stars took the lead for good with 10:55 gone in the first quarter when Stay found Jordon Keleher from seven yards out for the score and Mitch Ryder added the point after for a 7-0 lead. It was a 99-yard drive, with a key play being a 49-yard completion from Stay to Trevor St. Clair.

Plattsburgh's defense then accounted for the second touchdown of the game. With 4:53 left before half, the North Stars' Harry Rascoe drilled Montreal quarterback Matheu Rene, forcing a fumble deep in Voyageurs' territory. Adam Frennier fell on it in the end zone for a touchdown and Ryder's point after made it 14-0.

Montreal threatened to get on the board as the first half came to an end. But, the North Stars' defense held on three plays from their 1-yard line to turn the Voyageurs back.

Montreal's Andrew Blevings had a 49-yard run to set his team up at the North Stars' five. Outside of that run, the North Stars limited Montreal to a minus-seven yards in 18 rushing attempts.

"That was a big goal-line stand for us at the end of the half," Pat Keleher said. "Our defense played pretty well, especially up front."

Stay hooked up again with Jordon Keleher, this time on an 8-yard touchdown pass with 10:39 gone in the third. Ryder's point after gave the North Stars a 21-0 lead.

Ryder then closed out the scoring with a 32-yard field goal with 5:23 left in the fourth.

Stay finished 10-of-20 through the air for 131 yards. St. Clair caught four passes for 73 yards and Jordon Keleher five grabs for 39 yards. Zach Blocker rushed the ball 12 times for 88 yards.

"Kenny didn't have a bad night throwing the ball and Zach ran pretty hard," Pat Keleher said.

Rene had a good game throwing the ball for Montreal, completing 13-of-18 for 114 yards before leaving the game with an injury and not playing the fourth quarter. Thierry Fontin hauled in eight passes for 112 yards.

"They have some good players," Pat Keleher said. "I'd hate to see them with a 40-man roster."
