Sr. Mariners win 2 at Mohawk Classic

SCOTIA — Kasey Favreau and Will Flynn limited their opponents to a combined three runs Saturday as the Clinton County Senior Mariners won both of their Day 1 games in the Mohawk Classic, hosted by the Anaconda Indians.

The Mariners (20-6) recorded a 4-1 victory over Melvin Roads and then a 5-2 decision over the Montreal Titans U19 team.

“It was a good day for us,” said Mariners coach John Flynn. “We wanted to make sure we got off to a good start by winning the first game and then followed that up with another win.

“The only good thing that didn’t happen for us was going to the Golden Corral. They fed us after the game, however, which was nice.”

The Mariners will play at 10 a.m. in the semifinals today against Kingston. A win would put Clinton County into the 12:30 p.m. championship game against either Anaconda or Melvin Roads. If they lose to Kingston, the Mariners would play a 3 p.m. consolation game.

Favreau struck out four and allowed six hits in going the distance for the win against Melvin Roads.

“It was sort of like the game he pitched in Pennsylvania,” said Flynn. “His pitch count was getting up, and they loaded the bases with two out in the seventh. But I left him in there to face one more batter, and he got a comebacker to the mound.

“I was happy with how he pitched — he’s a battler.”

Offensively, the Mariners broke a 1-all tie with two runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Clinton County managed just four hits off losing pitcher Mike DeCarlo. Chris Roenbeck rapped an RBI single in the first, while Will Flynn added a double and Tom Curran and Brian Latulipe singles later on.

“He was a good pitcher, and you have to give credit where it’s due,” said Flynn. “But the most important thing is that we won.”

Then it was Will Flynn’s turn against the Titans as he went the route for the win, striking out four and allowing four hits.

“We gave Will some time off to rest leading up to the weekend,” said the elder Flynn. “It was good for him.

“He pitched well, and we had a couple of balls misplayed in the outfield that hurt us. We can’t allow that to happen in the district playoffs.”

Ben Weightman led the Mariners’ 10-hit offense with three singles. Favreau added a double and single, Latulipe two singles and Will Flynn a double.

Clinton County trailed, 2-0, before getting a run in the third, one in the fourth and three in the sixth to take the lead for good.

“After we had taken a 3-2 lead in the sixth, Weightman had a big two-out, two-run single for us,” said Flynn. “He had three hits in the game, and we go as he goes.

“We got behind, 2-0, early and were a little flat. But we came back to win, and we’re on a roll right now.”
