PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team unofficially opened the 2012-13 season with a 2-1 win against the Etobicoke Junior Dolphins Saturday afternoon at the Stafford Ice Arena.
Per NCAA rules, statistics and results of the meeting will not count against the Cardinals’ record. The Junior Dolphins are a member of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League and are currently on a U.S. college tour.
The Cardinals struck early when freshman Caitlin Gilligan found the back of the net at the 4:49 mark of the first period. Chelsea VanGlahn and Jordan Caldwell picked up assists on the goal to give Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead.
Plattsburgh took a 2-0 lead with 3:36 left in the first period when Cardinal rookie Breanne Bennett tallied the eventual game-winner from Caldwell and Kenzie Menzak.
Etobicoke cut the Cardinal lead down to one when Nicole Atkinson scored at the 14:42 mark of the second period. Cara Sayles and Mackenzie Johnston were credited with assists on the goal.
The Cardinals outshot the Dolphins, 41-12, including a 19-1 margin in the third period.
Sydney Aveson got the start net for Plattsburgh, making eight saves through 30:22. Ally Ross took over goaltending duties for the rest of the way, recording three saves and allowing one goal. Etobicoke’s Amanda Smith allowed two goals and made nine saves in the first period. Keri Martin turned away 30 shots in 39:17 before the Dolphins played the final 43 seconds with an empty net.
Plattsburgh State will officially open the season with an early test next weekend at the Norwich East/West Classic. The Cardinals will take on Manhattanville Saturday at 6 p.m. before wrapping up the tournament Sunday against host Norwich at 4 p.m.
