WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team's offensive woes against quality teams continued Monday night.
The Cardinals and Williams College battled to a 1-all overtime tie in non-conference play.
Cardinals' head coach Bob Emery said his team did everything just about right, except put the puck in the net.
"It's frustrating," he said. "We played hard and we played well. We managed the puck well in our zone, except for the one mistake when they scored, and we played our style of hockey to a tee. We got the puck in deep and got our cycle going.
"But, we don't have a win to show for it."
Plattsburgh State (10-2-4) was kept off the board in the first period, despite a 16-7 advantage in shots on goal.
The Ephs then grabbed a 1-0 lead at 6:08 of the second period on Matt Masucci's goal.
The lead, however, didn't last long when Andrew Willock tied it for the Cardinals shortly after, at the 6:50 mark.
Neither team could score in the third period or overtime.
"The game was allowed to be played like an old NHL game," Emery said. "Our players responded well, despite the atmosphere.
"But, we aren't putting the pucks away. We had plenty of chances tonight with loose pucks in front and open nets. We need to find a way to get the easy goals in tough places."
Plattsburgh State was credited with a 32-26 advantage in shots on goal, with Josh Leis making 25 saves for the Cardinals and Ryan Purdy 31 stops for the Ephs (7-3-2).
"It's good that we're keeping the pucks out of our net and we certainly didn't get outplayed tonight," Emery said.
The Cardinals also had their bench shortened by two players after injuries to forwards Eric Satim and Ian DeLong in the second period. Satim leads the Cardinals in scoring.
"Satim is likely going to be out for a while," Emery said. "We will need to re-evaluate things."
The Cardinals return to State University of New York Athletic Conference play this weekend at Brockport on Friday and Geneseo on Saturday.
